DS looking very seriously at NY Maritime as his primary NROTC school if not selected for USNA, CGA or academy prep schools. Had a brief visit this summer and looks like a great school. Any insight or information about the school, NROTC, or CG programs there from any folks? Thank you.

DD applied early decision. We are anxiously awaiting decision. She has visited twice including an overnight hosted by the soccer coach. The curriculum is rigorous and many students don't finish in 4 years. My daughter is interested in either coast guard or NOAA corps and will likely apply for a SSOP Student Incentive Program which will require drilling with the NROTC Battalion. I think they have about 165 in the Battalion with students from SUNY, Fordham, Malloy and Columbia in the program. Good luck in your research.

Frank, my DD has already expressed some interest in SUNY Maritime, although only a 9th grader. If your DD decides to go there, we'd appreciate her/your comments/reviews, etc. We're in EG too!

DD is now a Mug, starting on the soccer team and doing the NROTC Strategic Sealift Officer Program. So far so good.

SUNY Maritime

Hello.. My DS is very interested in attending SUNY Maritime. His application at USMMA is currently in a HOLD status. He applied to SUNY Maritime regular decision. If he decides to attend SUNY Maritime he is interested in the SSOP program. He also is interested in playing sports. Does anyone know how much time the SSOP program requires weekly? Is it possible to still play a sport? Thank you so much.

Bumping this. Perhaps someone can explain the differences between the requirements of the SSOP program & the regular NROTC program at Ft Schuyler?

Speaking from Texas A&M Maritime Academy perspective—SSOP individuals are regular members of the NROTC and do all NROTC functions. There does not seem to be any additional requirements to be a SSOP member.

Yes, playing a sport is possible as long as DS keeps up academics and NROTC duties. NROTC duties can vary according to the level of leadership he may undertake both at the NROTC level and at the Corps level.

My son is a MUG at SUNY Maritime. He does not participate in SSOP, but he has a friend who does. He said his friend does SSOP activities (very physical) about 3 times a week for 2 hours in the morning. It is a rigorous program. It is possible to do both, but my son said it would be very tough. BTW my son is a firm believer that SUNY Maritime is a great program and a great school.

Thank you very much for the information. SUNY Maritime is a wonderful school and he will look into the SSOP program as well. I am glad to hear your son is doing so well. My son plans on giving the NROTC office a call to get some more information. Thanks again...

My DD got through the her first semester this fall participating in NROTC and varsity soccer. This required carrying 21 credits including the required naval science course + lab. Very rigorous. She loves Maritime. If anything the participation on the team helped. She's surrounded by upper class females who have been through it and who took her under their wings. Her grades were not stellar, but this had more to do with the transition than the workload. She got through. She's excited to go back now after the holiday break and seems ready to hit the ground running. They tried to recruit her for lacrosse, but she says she would rather focus on academics... which is fine with me. She's pretty intense on the field and would be scary with a stick in her hand ;>)

Hello. Glad to hear your daughter had a good first semester at SUNY Maritime. My son applied regular decision, so he will have to wait till March 1st to hear if he will get accepted. Can you tell me more about the SSOP program? My son is also waiting to hear from USMMA. What exactly are the requirements for SSOP? Thank you for your help.

SUNY is a great school but I would prefer KP if you can get it.

My good friend and classmate is the President at SUNY.
