Transcript

If you a candidate then no, it is not necessary. But you can send it in if you like.

Does USNA require a fall semester transcript?

Admissions told our DS they did not need his 7th semester grades, but would want to see his end of year grades to be sure calc and physics turned out satisfactorily.

Best for you to call them and ask them as only they can tell you.

So can someone clarify this issue of 7th semester grades? I have seen differing opinions on whether or not it is needed. My niece was not asked for her 7th semester grades. She contacted her Regional Director earlier this week to ask if there was anything else she could do to improve her application. They responded that nothing else was needed at this time (including 7th semester grades). Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Do they only ask if your earlier grades were not strong? We are just puzzled (and yes, I know, probably trying to read way more into it than we need to).
Side note: She is very strong academically (3.95 GPA, ACT 33 math and 33 English, and has taken every AP class offered). She is disappointed because she is concerned they are not interested in her 7th semester grades because they have already decided she is "not in the running"....

My guess is that she is qualified, academically, and if there is a weakness, it would not likely be academic. Hence the reason they wouldn't need to see any further academic proof. If she were "not in the running" it would be for another reason so I wouldn't worry that it's a reflection of their thoughts on her academically. My DS, on the other hand, does not have that strong of an academic standing so his RD contacted him last week and said, "It is very important that you submit your 7th semester transcripts". Not at all sure what this means...good or bad! Would LOVE to hear someone's perspective of that request. Although, if I had to guess, I would say he's on the bubble and they want to see how he did this past semester. He got an A in Physics honors but a C in AP Calculus. Curious if anyone could guess if a C will sink him? Are they wanting to see that he didn't 'fail' Calculus or are they wanting to see that he had at least taken it (as he had indicated) and passed? Not sure what to think of it.

Either way, if they don't request the transcripts than they likely find the candidate academically qualified or too under qualified for the transcripts to make a difference at that point. I'm guessing your niece is good to go academically! Good Luck To Her!!! Things will start happening very soon, according to my DS's RD!

As with most things in the military, if USNA wants your 7th semester grades, they will ask for them. Last year, many candidates who had not yet received a decision, were asked to submit 7th semester grades around this time of year. Not sure if that will happen this year or not. If you're not asked to do so, it likely means that USNA will not be swayed for better or worse by those grades.

I believe those appointed will be required to submit their final transcripts as proof they completed their courses/earned their degree and to show the grades they earned.

This is a section copied and pasted from a mass email sent from my son's regional coordinator regarding the Jan 31 deadline:

"What the Deadline Does Not Apply To:

Your Medical Assessment does NOT have to be completed by January 31.
Your fall transcript does NOT have to be sent by the deadline (but please do send them as soon as possible)."

So, to me, this looks like they will eventually want your 7th semester transcript, just not by the Jan 31 deadline.

My DDs RD just told her yesterday they don't require 7th semester grades or transcripts, and if they want them for some reason, they will ask. He said there is no indication that admissions is asking for hers and her application was all set. I don't know if this is good or bad. She is a 4.0 student, top 6% in class, 5 on AP Chem Exam, and 32 ACT with a 34 Math, so I am hoping they don't need it because they are satisfied with her academic qualifications, and guessing the ones they are asking for transcripts from are maybe on the bubble or taking a math or science class senior year that they are interested in seeing their progress.

I do know that if you are a college student/ re-applicant, then you must send in Fall grades.

D asked to send in hers. Not sure why? 3Q'd at USMA with LOE. Wouldn't that mean she is qualified at other SA's?

They each look at things a little differently, so no telling.

Did she take AP Chem last year or this year? I know the current Dean of Admissions is BIG on AP Chem. SO if she is just now taking it they may want to see how that is going?

Asking for her grades doesn't necc. mean she hasn't been deemed 3Q, she may be qualified, but might be neck and neck with another candidate and they want to see how here 7th semester is going? There are so many different reasons why they might be asking. I think its a positive they are asking, because at least you know she is still in consideration!!

Sooner or later...they will want that transcript. Make no mistake about it e.g. they didn't ask for DS's 7th semester transcript last year , he asked whether to send it or not...and they said yes.
As USNA1985 noted above, upon appointment part of the paperwork submitted was indeed that final transcript.

I think it is case by case. My older two, one mid and one 2014 grad, never had to send any additional transcripts. A final was never requested in appointment paperwork and never sent.

That said, if you have done well, especially if you have improved, it would never hurt to send it in!

Not necessarily. As a poster above noted, each SA makes it own decisions. Also, there is a difference between being qualified and being offered an appointment. You could be qualified for all 3 but more competitive at one than at the others.

It is not uncommon to end up with an appointment to one SA and a turndown from another.

My niece did not receive this mass e-mail as stated above. In her case (as in falconchic88) her RD told her 1st semester grades were not necessary. I wonder how many candidates received this "mass e-mail"?

My DD did not get the mass email. She got a personal email from her RD asking when she planned on completing her Personal Data Statement (she has done everything except finishing the essay). We wondered if that meant anything or not. Part of me thinks they wouldn't send that to someone they weren't seriously considering. Another part of me thinks that they send emails to anyone that is close to having everything completed in the process.

Best advice I can give is 1. Try not to read into anything and 2. Get the application done and hurry up and wait.

It's impossible to read Admissions mind. Many have tried and the best you're going to do is a lucky guess. It's best to try not to discern why they asked for this or why they didn't. Just get the app done and just wait and pray. As my mom always says, "You'll know when you know."

It is their job to make sure all their active candidates have completed their application. Don't think it means anything.

The email came from our Regional Director (RD) which in our case is Region 3.
