Hi every0ne, I am a sophomore in high school and doing my best to receive appointment to an academy or receive an ROTC scholarship. I have really been trying to increase my chances of getting into an academy, especially USAFA. I am in CAP and hold staff in AFJROTC. I know that principal appointments from a congressman can almost guarantee a spot in the academy (or so I've heard), and was wondering what I can do to increase my chances of possibly obtaining one. Also if anyone else has any advice that'd be helpful. Thanks and have a nice day.

So many factors the first being is nobody on here could answer that; we can only give you general examples of what's happened in the past. Another factor to that question is do you even know if the MoCs you will be applying to use the Principal method?

My suggestion is read around the forum for a while. Especially in the nomination section to get some idea. Read some of Christcorp old post and you'll start getting a picture of what a well rounded candidate looks like.

Members of Congress don't appoint, they nominate, so, as Boozebin said, you need to know if your Senators and Representative submit a competitive nomination slate or a principle/ranked slate. Either way, the answer to your question is still the same, do everything in your power to be the best candidate you can be. Study for and take the ACT/SATs early and often, strive for the highest possible score. Shoot for all As in the most challenging courses your your school offers, take on leadership positions in and out of school (you are on the right track with being on AFJROTC staff), participate in high school varsity sports, be in top physical condition and practice the Candidate Fitness Assessment, find a passion out side of school (ie community involvement), apply to the Summer Seminar the winter of Junior year, know about the majors and careers available to the SA you want to attend, know why you want to attend and what you want to do after you graduate from a SA. The list goes on and on. There is no magic formula that will guarantee you a MOC nomination (principal or not) or an appointment, highly qualified candidates are rejected every year. There just isn't enough appointments slots to go around, but the Academies have a pretty successful track record of putting together the right mix of appointees to form a class. All you can do is be the best candidate you can be and don't settle for less than your best. Then, its out of your hands and you know you've done all you could do.

Ok thanks. What is the best way to find out what the MoCs methods are and is it a good idea to contact them at my current age and part of process I'm in.

Usually the best time to contact your MOC is the spring of your Junior year. They are busy with wrapping up current Senior's slates and getting ready to open current Junior applications right now.

I recieved a principal nomination from my MOC a month ago. I really wasnt expecting a principal nomination, I actually didnt even know my MOC gave principals. So, when I got the phone call from my MOC awarding me my Principal Nomination I was speechless. I honestly do not have a stellar academic track record, I took mostly APs and Honors courses but I am a B+ student. My extracurricular are pretty good, but I believe my interview is what got me my Principal Nomination. Seriously, just be yourself and explain to the board of interviewers your purpose. Try your best to be genuine and be confident.

It is important to remember that every congressional district is different. Some MOCs may care more about academics, others may care more about the interview. My advice to you is challenge yourself and be the best that you can be. Goodluck!

Not sure why their method matters. The fact is it doesn't matter. Sorry. If they do principal, rank or competitive, it is their process and you have to be the best candidate. What you should do in my opinion is go on the nomination forum, search your state and take it from there.
~ Chances are you can find your state and determine how they nominate without contacting the MOC directly.

Spend your time studying for the PSAT and making sure you are a well rounded candidate. Hardest curriculum available. Sports and club leadership. Best super scores for SAT and ACT.
~ Highest Whole Candidate Score on the slate wins the appointment!

If you have any medical issues, get your paperwork in order for DoDMERB
~ Prescribed an inhaled for asthma after 13
~ Concussion
~ Food allergy
~ Vision

The info is here if you take the time and search for it.
