Can USMA graduates be stationed at the Pentagon?

I am considering applying to West Point, but I have some reservations about my life in the army afterwards. It has always been a dream of mine to work for a government organization in Washington D.C., whether it be the CIA or the FBI. Now that I am considering West Point, I was wondering if graduates are ever given positions at the Pentagon?
Furthermore, do students pick where they would like to be stationed?

In regards to students picking where they would like to be stationed, you will be ranked numerically once at the Academy based upon your physical, academic and military scores. This creates a class ranking system, from the very first cadet in the class to the last. Win the time comes, you will put in your ranked ordered preferences of where you want to be stationed and also what part of the Army you will join. Each station and each part has specific maximums for the graduating class, so they will be given out in the order of the class. For instance, if 500 people opt to join infantry, but only 250 spots are open, then only the 250 highest rated in the "class rank" of those 500 will get infantry. Same works for station.

Eventually, I would say there is definitely a shot to work at the Pentagon, but know that most likely this would occur much further down the road, after you have gained expertise and moved into a higher rank. There are simply less of a need for 2nd Lts. at the Pentagon than there is for them in other parts of the Army.

The other option would be to serve your time after the Academy, get out, and then apply to join either the CIA, FBI or one of those organizations. Nothing looks better on a job application than a West Point education and military service. Best of Luck!

So do you want to serve as an officer in the US Army? I can't really tell from your post. If not, what about pursuing other avenues to a government job such as a criminal justice major or accounting major at a civilian college?

FWIW, those two three-letter agencies really like to hire former Military Intelligence officers and Cyber types much more so than Criminal Justice majors.

go to West Point and serve as a MI officer. Learn a hard language like Arabic or Russian.

maybe like 70% of all Army officers at one point of their careers (unlike SOFs) were assigned to the Pentagon and other offices in the Northern VA area. And many wants to avoid the DC area as it is too expensive. If you want to be promoted to general, then a joint assignment is required.....

What's the most useful language for combat arms? Farsi, Arabic, etc. I don't know if I should try to become fluent in Spanish or learn a language that will help me communicate.

iz314,

I have to laugh because most officers, at least AF will avoid the Pentagon like the plague. Bullet works at the Pentagon, now as a civilian, but when he was ADAF he also was assigned there as an O5.

I go up there frequently for lunch or office functions (promotions/retirements). Honestly, seeing a company grade officer (O1/2/3) is a rarity. The running joke is an O4 is the snacko/coffee pogue in the office...at least for AF.

I would also say as a Realtor here in No. VA. the cost of housing is very high here. A studio apartment (600 sqft) near the Pentagon will most likely equate to out of pocket costs not only for rent, but utilities too for an O1/2. Many live 45 minutes away and Slug in. Slugging is what most people would consider legalized hitch hiking.
~ One reason why is there are limited parking spots at the Pentagon, thus as a Company grade officer you won't be likely to garner a spot.
~ Bullet is up at 5:30, at the slug parking lot at 6:15 and his desk at 7. He leaves the Pentagon at 4:30 and is home 5:45. That is the norm in this area.

The CIA and FBI recruit heavily on many campuses. Many majors are sought after. We personally know an Accounting graduate with a CPA who recently was recruited and joined the FBI. You do not have to go to USMA or be a military officer to get into these alphabet soup organizations. A lot depends on what you want to do within those organizations.

I would say your best bet is to go wherever you would like for college (usma or not) and major in a useful field with a double major or minor in a difficult language like Chinese or some other language mentioned before. Learn some other skills too to help you for whatever job you want. Get scuba or jump qualified, etc. this is just what I have heard from documentaries and books, seems like sound advice.

You clearly do not want to be an Army officer. You want to be government cog. Go into government, not the Army.
