Over the four years at USMMA what is the total amount you have to pay. I know that tuition and room and board are free, but unlike the other service academies you have to pay fees for a laptop, laundry, a hairdresser, transportation and more. All those fees add up to a pretty large sum. According to the USMMA website it looks like the class of 2017 has to pay around $10,000. Is this for all four years? Could same one tell me if I am understanding this correctly.

Actual cost will be around $10k or maybe a little less over 4 years, precisely correct.

Are students paid as they are at other academies? I believe they are while at sea but what about during time on campus?

They are not paid while in residence. The shipping companies pay them when they are at sea.

Keep in mind that number can vary greatly depending on how far and how frequently you travel home. In addition, M/N earn approximately 1k per month while at sea.

Someone told me that cadets are "required" to buy a laptop at USAFA. I might be outdated. correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure how that relates to if MN at USMMA are paid or not. USMMA m/n are required to buy a laptop as well. The difference is that it ends up coming out of USAFA cadet pay whereas at USMMA it comes out of pocket

Fees are about $350 per Tri at this point. Yes, had to purchase a lap top, printer, and a bunch of white undergarments. An insurance policy is required as well if you don't have a PPO. That was about $1800 for the year.

@ USAFA, the laundry, uniforms, laptops and other miscellaneous expenses are taken out of the cadet's pay spread over time.

Unlike the other service academies, you are not "paid" to attend USMMA nor are your uniforms, computers and other living expenses. Fortunately, Federal student loans will easily cover the out of pocket costs, if necessary. Thus, financial comparisons to USAFA, USNA, etc. are completely useless. But any way you look at it, it is still much cheaper than even a community college.

Not sure if it still works the way it did when I attended. Remember, Mids at KP are there on NROTC scholarships. In my day, we never saw the money for expenses that were part of the NROTC. They were put into an account and we used our ID cards like a credit card for books, uniforms, etc. The accounts were managed by the Ship's Store. Pretty sure our meals were also part of that account. Extra meals such as those bought from the Canteen, or at the Midshipmen's Pub (does that still exist?) were out of pocket. Our "pay" as stated elsewhere only came from our cadet shipping (at a whopping $11.40/day in my time). As far as expenses, I can't recall because my parents picked those up. Pretty sure they included home football game tickets (even when at sea), yearbook and other odd expenses. My time at the Zoo predated laptops and PCs. . . . . I did bring a mechanical typewriter with me and made extra beer $$$ by typing term papers and such for others at a buck a page.

I believe current midshipmen are technically USNReserve. There was quite a kerfuffle a couple years ago when government auditors found KP was doing all its finances incorrectly. As a result, there are many new "fees" that are not covered. According to the USMMA website, expenses run from $9768 for incoming class of 2019 down to $6776. http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/financial-aid/cost-attendance.

I'm not sure where the 10 grand fee came from but that is not correct. The "fees owed" are much less than that.
The "total billed costs" for the class of 2107 was about 1 grand for their first year...
(the 1st class year is roughly the same cost- and the 2nd class and 3rd class years are considerably less than that (mids are out to sea part of the school year).)
In addition for new expenses for newbies, there will be expenses of TWIC card, Laptop, plebe kit (mandatory) and personal items you will need when reporting to school; toothpaste and toiletries, white undies, tee shirts, tennis shoes...
Yes, other academies will "pay you" but you end up owing back for individual services. the KP mid does NOT pay for hairdresser, laundry, uniforms, alterations, etc etc etc. Yet the mid does get "paid" while out at sea.
Hope this helps explain it better!!!

Yes, the KP mids are part of the Naval Reserve. Your observations about "a couple years ago when gov auditors found KP was doing all it's finances incorrectly" is disconcerning. There have been no new fees that are different now than what were already there 4 and 5 years ago. Also...you are not reading it right- for health insurance, most already have it... you sign a waiver saying you have it. (all academies will require you to keep your family health ins now). If someone doesn't have health isurance then yes, they have to purchase the school offered insurance. (that is acorss the board now, at ALL Academies, NOT just KP). If someone already has it then sign the waiver and they don't add in that "cost" to their calculations.
Also- the "estimated" costs that you are looking at are just estimates- much depends on where you live/ how expensive it is to get home (for holidays)/ or what you purchase for school supplies etc.

For some of the old-timers here, in 2008 a big IG audit yielded major financial adjustments and a some of us even received refunds for overcharging students!. (go back to 2009 forum). But today, you are correct, Billed expenses are quite low, but don't forget other expenses. And if necessary, you can get grants or loans. USMMA is an amazing deal. But generally, all the US Maritime schools, i.e. Cal, Great Lakes, Maine, Mass, SUNY Maritime Academies and Texas A&M are excellent cost effective schools that get your degree and USCG license, if that is your objective.

Are you 100% sure about that? Students at the other academies are technically active duty and fall under TRICARE (unless that changed in the last four years).

yes, I am sure. All the new health care requirements changed just a few years ago....
