Can I still get an appointment?

I received my nomination from Robert Pittenger (NC District 9 rep.) back in December. Since then I know of about 3 people who were nominated by him as well who have received appointments. After talking to my BGO I was told or lead to believe (although im still a little confused) that my congressman can only represent so many people at one time at a service academy. For example he may have a total of 5 slots available and he nominates 4 people in 2013 that decide to go. In 2014 he only can represent 1 more person till all of those others graduate or leave. Is this correct? If not could someone explain if people he nominated prior to me still being at the academy affect me or not? Also how bad does it hurt my chances of getting in when all these other people in my district are getting in now? Thanks

Yes I believe each congressman is allowed 5 (maybe 10 Im not 100% sure, someone else can clarify for me) slots to represent at each academy. So like you said, if 4/5 of his slots are already at the academy, only 1 more candidate can be accepted under his nomination until one or more of the total 5 slots graduate.

Yes you still can get an appointment. Just because those 3 people received nominations doesn't mean that their appointments will be charged to him. Depending on how many Noms they qualified for they could end up with a nomination from the President, VP, Supt, Senator. Who you think you got your Nom from and who you end up getting charged to can end up being two totally different things. For instance in an area like Northern Virginia there can be multiple students appointed from one high school and another handful for the other high schools all within 10 miles of one another. Those students obviously are not all charged to the same MOC because of the rules mentioned above with a limitation of 5 persons at a SA at anytime. Although they reside within a certain congressional district, the spot they are charged to could be a variety of nominating sources they are qualified for. The SAs know how to put this puzzle together. All you can do is put the best package possible together and hope the stars align.

There is a difference between nominating and charging to the MOC.

An MOC by law can have only 5 charged to them. It is very rare that an MOC would get charged all 4 in one year.

It is not impossible that 8+ on a slate get appointed. However,it is typical that only one will be charged to the MOC.
For example:
Candidate Smith has ~ Presidential, 3MOCs and ROTC. ~~~ charged to Presidential
Candidate Jones has ~ 3 MOCs ~~~ charged to Sen. A
Candidate Jane also has 3 ~~~ charged to Sen B
Candidate Jimmy has ~ ROTC and 3 MOCs ~~~ charged to ROTC
Candidate Perez has MOC, congressmen only, but an LOA. Charged to the Supe.
Candidate Craig has only the congressmen. Charged to them.
Candidate Claire has only the congressmen. Sent to the NWL and appointed.
Candidate Lucas gets a VP appointment.

There you go 8 on that one MOC slate are appointed, but only 1 was charged to the MOC.

OBTW MOCs typically will submit multiple slates if they want them to be charged two or more. Some will place identical slates for each charge. Others will submit different slates. IE they may submit a slate of 10 A-M for one slate and a slate of 10 N-Z for the other vacancy.

Something I have wondered is... Are the "slots" that opened up in a district only previous nominated cadets that were "charged" to MOC slate or anyone who was nominated by the MOC.
If Candidate Jan drops out does that give the MOC an open slot?

Hope you don't mind me jumping to ask a question I have had! Do recruited athletes have same process? Are they calculated in the number charged to a MOC?

Larry,

If candidate Jan was charged to the MOC and anytime after I day until commissioning they leave, than the MOC will get another one eligible for the MOC to nominate on the next slate.
~ IE 5% will leave during BCT. If candidate Jan leaves August, the MOC may decide to now offer 2.

If candidate Jan decides May 1st not to go, than USNA has the opportunity to offer an appointment to the next highest WCS on the slate that has yet to be charged.
~ Yes, there have been appointments late in the game....rare, but it occurs because Candidate Jan is not going to be reporting on I Day.

That is a depends answer. Recruited athletes typically have an LOA. All they need is a nomination. An MOC can decide to give a principal to a non LOA candidate and place the LOA on their slate. The principal will be appointed and charged to the MOC. The LOA will be appointed and can be charged to the Super or VP, etc. If the MOC does not use principal, and uses rank method, than they could be charged to the MOC if their WCS is the highest score for the slate.

If.

I picked Jane because she was charged to SEN B in your example. So I assume if Jane does leave then the MOC does not get an additional slot becuase she was not charged to the MOC. SEN B gets the extra slot.

My understanding of the process would support your conclusion; the MOC is responsible only for those who have been charged to his/her account.

The explanations in this thread are helpful for understanding the process, but seems the truth is, we'll all just have to wait. I noticed on the 2019 appointment thread that a candidate from our district (VA-10) received an appointment. I was thinking that was one nomination source (DS received 2 noms) gone for DS (assuming he only has one slot at USNA this year), but the candidate had an LOA, so maybe that appointment wasn't charged to our MOC. I guess there really is no point to trying to figure the numbers -- just wait and see.

Anything is possible....5 appointments to USAFA from 10 noms from our district for 2018. I don't believe there were any LOAs.
