I live in NY-03 (Steve Israel). Has anyone heard anything from him or senators Gillibrand or Schumer?

Hey USNA, I am not in your congressional district, but I got a call from Senator Gillibrand's office earlier this week to set a a phone interview for tomorrow. I am at college in PA, so I was wondering if if anyone knew whether all of Senator Gillibrand's interviews are done over the phone, or if it's just for the out of state kids. Thanks I hope everyone has a nice holiday.

I'm in NY18. I had an interview with Maloney weeks and weeks ago but no reply yet. I think they're still doing interviews for senators, I just had mine for Gillibrand a week or so ago. I hope we'll hear back from everyone early January maybe?
meverett1996 - Probably, yeah. I don't think they would make you come back from college just for one interview while you're in the middle of finals and all that. I had mine in person with her staff but I'm still in HS and live close to NYC.

I'm in also in NY-18 with Congressman Maloney and interviewed several weeks ago. No news yet either. Last year when I applied to Congressman Maloney's office they gave me my decision in the first week of January, hopefully they will do the same this year.

I live in NY 17, I believe it's just the applicants living out of state that are getting phone interviews- I had mine in person. Good luck!

Son had phone interview with Gillibrand yesterday. He has already been given a nomination by Congressman Owens. His letter came on Monday. Last year it came in early Jan., but he is leaving office so it came earlier this year. We have not heard from Shumer except a phone call a while ago that said they would be doing interviews in mid December and they would call if he was getting one. We have not heard anything.

Gillibrand

Son had in-person interview with Gillibrand's committee last week. No word yet. We are in 21st congressional district and son was notified last week of nominations for USNA, USAFA and West Point by Bill Owens.

Nothing from Schumer.

DS had interview with Sen Gillibrand, has not heard from Sen Schumer either.

Does anyone happen to know if NY is a competitive state?
Yes NY is a highly competitive state. Not as competitive like California or Maryland, but very close.

NY is very populous so it's 'competitive' to get a Senator's nomination. For MOCs not all districts are competitive. Many districts in Manhattan, Westchester, Brooklyn and the Bronx get fewer applicants than nominations available (our district in Manhattan had 3 applications for USNA, 2 for USMA and 1 for USMMA last year when 10 noms for each were available). DS did get a nom from Sen and Rep so he was from a 'not competitive' district but was still 'competitive' state wide. Also note that 'competitive' states like Maryland and Virginia also have disproportionately large representation among the brigade. Maryland and Virginia were third and fourth most represented in the brigade according to a recent article and New York wasn't in the top 5 despite being the 3rd most populous state. So, in my opinion, 'it depends' and you can't generalize across the entire State.

So would it look better to an academy if you receive a senator's nomination over a congressional?

A nomination is a nomination - they are all treated the same even though some are harder to get than others! You can't control where you live or how competitive your district/state is so it's logical that nominations are treated equally across the entire US. Some Senators and Reps communicate and won't nominate the same person so those that get a Rep. nom first are then precluded from getting a Sen. nom - wouldn't be fair if the noms were treated differently.
