NOMINATION OR APPOINTMENT CERTIFICATE?

So my DS just receive a certificate from MOC (CA-51) and it reads: "CERTIFICATE OF SPECIAL CONGRESSIONAL RECOGNITION presented to DS on the occasion of your appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy". So I might sound like a moron but did they make a mistake by saying appointment instead of nomination? Is it normal for MOC to send an appointment certificate and not make a personal call to DS? Please somebody shed some light on this certificate he just received. Thanks all in advance.
 
If it said appointment I would think it means APPOINTMENT. You would figure that MOCs have been around long enough not to make that mistake. Call his/her office and find out!
 
I did and the actual person that handles nomination I think doesn't know what he's talking about or even know a certificate was sent out. He said just to wait since USNA usually sends appointment letters between now and April.
 
DS received the same thing last year then received the BFE. I know of others where the MOC misprinted and meant Nomination. The MOCs are told first but I would just keep it all in perspective-no appointment celebration until MOC calls and/or BFE arrives.
 
Sad to say, but there are some MOC offices who truly do not know the difference between a nomination and an appointment. Case in point, please see recent thread entitled "c/o 2019 Appointees". There is a link in one of the posts where some of the candidates posted letters from their Congressman's offices. In one of the letters, a MOC from Michigan wrote "Only a select few students apply for a nomination to the United States Naval Academy, and even fewer receive a nomination." Think about that statement...hmmm...

Actually that seems like a reasonable and true statement. Few apply, fewer are chosen. Makes sense to me. Am I missing something. I probably am given I don't have the rest of the letter for context.

Well, our Congressman stated more along the lines of MANY apply, buy only a few nominations are given out. He goes on to mention that even fewer receive appointments. Just sounds odd to say that "only a select few apply for a nomination". But we live in a very competitive district, so perhaps in that district in Michigan it may be true that only a select few apply for a nomination. Wish that were true for all!!!
 
I actually think that MOC wasn't making such an odd statement. Look at the numbers - there are around ~700k people in each congressional district, ~50,000 15 to 19 year olds which implies around ~10,000 18 year olds per district (these numbers are from census.gov, by the way). So how many kids apply per district? 17,600 apps for class of 2018 for 435 congressional districts would be 40 per district at USNA. That's 0.4% of kids in the district and a little over 1% if a similar number apply to USMA and USAFA. I think that fits in the 'few' category! ;-)

So his certificate read "appointment"? How long after did he received the BFE?
 
Usually it will be more than a week. Most take anywhere from 2-4. Depends on how far you are from the academy.

He got a call first saying he was the principal nominee then the certificate and the BFE followed 3 weeks later (holidays). His certificate did read appointment.

Caution though-I did know of a couple like this last year that were printing errors.

Hoping it's truly an appointment!!
 
So I received an email from DS BGO and he stated that DS will soon be receiving a conditional appointment letter from USNA Admissions. My DS medical status is currently under remedial which they simply asked for medical records to be sent about a few medical history they have in question. So what does "conditional appointment" mean?

It likely means that it will be an "unconditional appointment" once the remedial has cleared.
 
A conditional offer of appointment = Letter of Assurance. This means that IF the conditions on the conditional offer/LOA are met/cleared, your DS is guaranteed an appointment.
