I have a couple of questions about 4/c year.

1) Are Cadets allowed to have personal music players (i.e. Ipods, etc.)?

2) what is the rule on phones during 4/c year (I know swab summer doesn't allow them, but what about during the year)?

3) what is the rule on video chatting (I.e. Skype, FaceTime, snapchat, etc.)?

Thanks in advance.

My son is a current 4/C, so I can answer this with some certainty.

Once Swab Summer is over with, the 4/C's do get their phones back and are allowed to listen to music (with headphones). However, they are not allowed to have any social media on their phones. They must delete their social media accounts prior to the start or Swab Summer. This includes instagram, snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The cadre/leadership will check, and there will be people who try to push the envelope, and will likely get caught. They are permitted to use social media during the Winter Break, but the accounts must be deleted prior to returning to campus. Once "Carry On" is granted in the Spring, privileges like social media are returned.

FaceTime and Skype are sometimes allowed, and I believe it varies between companies. Texting is permitted AFTER phones are returned at the conclusion of Swab Summer.

My personal thoughts are that it is a good thing. 4/C year (especially the first semester) is really challenging and they don't need the distraction of social media.

One slight correction to grevar - accounts such as Facebook are allowed to be "deactivated", but do not have to be deleated.

Yes, you are correct. With Facebook, you can "deactivate" them and then simply log in again to activate them again. With Twitter, you only have 30 days to reactivate them or they delete. I am not an Instagram user, but I believe that those accounts cannot be recovered once deleted/deactivated.

Funny, this is a HUGE topic of discussion among the incoming Swabs in June.

Social media is a no. Don't do it, you'll get caught. Texting is fine after swab summer and with FaceTime and Skype just don't be too obvious you're using it.
