I would like any insight into applying/getting appointed from the fleet. DS has all in waiting on DODMERB. This is his 3rd time applying. As a high school senior, first year from prep school and now from the fleet. He has 100% support of his chain of command and CO of the ship. All high school records are great. First year college 36 hours and a 3.8 GPA with all required classes calculus, chemistry etc. thank you in advance for input

Wow sounds great. Not familiar with fleet applicants but it seems like your son is in a very good position. Just curious, your son applied to USNA from NAPS but didnt receive an appointment?

But you said that he went to prep school his second time applying... Isn't prep school all but guaranteed for admission to USNA?

Are those sponsored by the Navy, sounds interesting never heard of it before. I think your son is in a good spot though. Has he received a secnav nom?

There are other prep schools besides NAPS that are privately run. It is possible NavyFleetMom's DS attended one of those and not NAPS. There are no guarantees when you attend the private prep schools.

Many of the prep schools have sponsored and non sponsored students (free agents). Those who are sponsored are pretty much promised an appointment if they do well in school , stay out of legal trouble and avoid any serious injuries.

Does he have any meritorious masts or certificate of commendations? Seems like USNA likes to see a successful leader role out of their priors. Seems like most of the priors at NAPS have that in their history.

I am an enlisted sailor who has an appointment to the class of 2019. My high school GPA weighted was only 3.5 with classes that you said your son took such as calculus and chemistry. I had a 26 math and 25 english ACT score. I joined in August of 2013 and started my first application this past Summer. I work at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Virginia as a Corpsman. Got a Captain's recommendation who graduated from the academy in 95. I had my CO's recommendation who was an Admiral in charge of the hospital and Navy Medicine East (not sure if rank carries an influence as long as you have your CO's recommendation). I did decently on the CFA and finished everything except DoDMERB due to some optometry issues. I received an LOA in December, finished my application right before Christmas, and received my BFE at the beginning of January! I'm sure that your son will have no problem getting in. Good luck!

I would say your DS has a good a shot as any enlisted applicant. He has obviously wanted to attend USNA for a long time now and with the year of prep school should have the boxes checked for classes they are looking at. Not sure on his test scores, but guessing with his drive and year of prep he has raised those. I am guessing he hasn't been in the fleet long, but did he get positive endorsements from his leadership? Did he apply for a SecNav nom? Has he spoken to the fleet applicant coordinator in admissions? What did he say? Best of luck to your DS, hope there is good news at the end of all this. Please keep us updated!

NavyFleetMom ,

My DS is a Marine, graduated from high school in 2013 (3.78 GPA) received an appointment to USMMA April 2013. Long story short he went to an Academy Day that our former congressman hosted and the representative of USMMA told my DS that he could commission to any service branch from USMMA and play football. He found out during Plebe summer that the Academy only commissioned one Marine in 4 years. He realized he made a BIG mistake and withdrew from the Academy. The Commandant (Retired Marine) supported my DS %100 percent and gave him a favorable withdrawal. By the time he returned home it was to late to attend his back-up universities, so he enlisted. He graduated boot camp as the Honor Graduate, received a meritorious masts, and was meritoriously promoted to LCPL this fall, and is up for promotion again in March. My DS's Captain told him about the enlisted program to the Naval Academy, and he was back 100% by his unit and received 3 recommendation, from his Colonel and Lt. Col (both 19987 graduates of the USNA) and his Captain. Received a nomination from SecNav and our Congressman. Application complete December 6th, LOA received early January (was waiting on DOBMERB). Got the call on Monday that is BFE is on the way. I'm sure you will have no problem getting in!

Hi all! I hate to piggy back on this thread, but I don't want to start another thread for this..
I am applying for the C/o 2020, and also working out my backup plans. As my plan B if I don't get into the academy or get NROTC for 2020, I will do a year of college and hopefully get an appointment or NROTC for 2021. As my plan C, would it be beneficial to get back on the collegiate horse and try again for 2022 or to enlist and pursue an alternate commissioning source? I should add that I desire to be a Marine officer and have no qualms about serving in the enlisted ranks if that's what it takes.

Do a search on this enlisted-to-academy question as it has been discussed before at great length. The short answer is: it is harder, more fraught with pitfalls and personalities, more chances of getting shot down, and it burns up your eligible years as you prove your worth in your unit.

Spud,

I do agree it is more difficult, however, each enlisted's story is different and I commend all enlisted that have such a desire to attend the academy. May I ask, what do you mean by more fraught with pitfalls and personalities? I can only share my DS's story and that is he never planned on enlisting out of high school his goal was always to become an Officer in the Marine Corps. He is truly blessed to be given this opportunity and to be supported by his unit like he is.
