Foundation/NAPs question

Is it correct to assume that if a DD/DS is offered a Foundation/NAPs that it will come late in April after appointments are made?

Not necessarily. If you look on the thread forum for the prep schools, offers of appointment to NAPS/Foundation have already started to go out. However, last year many students who were on the "still in the game" thread from last year got emails on April 15th telling them they were wait listed for NAPS....my DS included, So I guess you could hear at any point in time from now til April 15.

No. He did not get in off of the wait list. He is reapplying as a college freshmen. For all of us that were posting our DS/DD were wait listed I never saw any postings of any who got in off the list.

DS received the Foundation offer in January. Does that mean, practically, a direct appointment is off the table? Even though technically, it should not have had any bearing on the direct appointment for the class of 2019 , it's supposedly a fallback plan.

Being offered -- or accepting -- Foundation/NAPS does not mean you cannot later receive a direct appointment. Most years, maybe a few do. Most don't.

In the past I have had candidates who received, sequentially, a Foundation offer which was rejected, a NAPS offer which was accepted, followed in a couple of weeks by an offer of appointment which was accepted. I am not sure of the trend at Admissions currently, so all I am saying is that don't give up, anything can happen. Do keep in mind that offers to NAPS or Foundation originate in Admissions, so I strongly recommend they be given serious consideration and not rejected out of hand. If you get to USNA as a midshipman you will discover that a good part of your class will have gotten there via NAPS or Foundation. Best wishes

Can someone clear up what the Foundation offers mean? I've never really heard of or know what a foundation offer is! Thanks!

Foundation is a 'scholarship' to a prep school (for 1 year). Like NAPs but chosen from the list below. Like NAPs, most go to USNA after finishing Foundation year. See info below.

Prep Program

The Foundation currently sponsors up to 50-60 candidates for one year of post-high school study at 15 civilian and 3 military preparatory schools. The schools include high school/prep schools, junior colleges, and a four-year university. It is up to the candidates, once accepted for sponsorship, to indicate which schools they would most like to attend for their prep year. Candidates recommended to the Foundation by USNA Admissions include men and women, athletes and non-athletes and students of varied ethnic backgrounds.

So if you go to a foundation school, are you doing a senior year again with civilian students in most of the schools?

Looking for someone who has experience with Portsmouth Abbey foundation program. Just informed that is a possibility for my DS.

As stated above, I think all Foundation programs are a fifth year. Student will repeat and concentrate on science and math courses with seniors at the school. Portsmouth Abbey is a great school on Aquidneck Island but the cost can be tough even with a Foundation scholarship (tuition about 50K per year). Some of the schools on the list are male only (Avon Old Farms for example). Good Luck.

Thanks! Was looking to see if anyone had a kid there and subsequently went on to USNA. Also have questions about if the academy bound kids are roomed together, if there is an advisor at the school specifically for them....my concern is that is will be a make or break year and they are being thrust into an unknown environment where most kids have been there for 3 years. Is there someone there to help guide him or is he sink or swim on his own? Also, is there a specific curriculum that the academy dictates for the "fifth year?" Thanks for any info, specifically to Portsmouth Abbey!

DS was a Foundation sponsored candidate and is now a Plebe c/o 2019. He did not go to Portsmouth Abbey, but did attend a private east coast prep school. If your DS has been contacted by Capt Ed Wallace, USNA Foundation, he should be able to provide you w/ former/current preps and the prep advisor at Portsmouth. DS roomed with another Foundation prep and took the same required classes AP Calc, AP Chem and Physics. Their electives varied. I think all Foundation designated schools are similar. DS had a lot of support at his school, Foundation and Capt Wallace also monitors the preps throughout their Foundation year.
