As most have probably seen, you'll be given the option to buy one of several sets of pre-approved boots before CBT. The list usually features a Belleville and a Bates M-8, and one other.

I have always worn Bellevilles, right back to when the black issued ICB (improved combat boot) was issued in 2003. I've ventured into other brands. Nike. Oakley. Rocky. But always liked Belleville. Yesterday I bought a set of Bates M-8s. I do not like them, nor do I recommend them.

If anyone needs help acquiring boots, let me know.

Last year the boot letter, dated mid-March, included 3 options: Rocky C4T, Belleville Khyber TR360 Mountain Hybrid, and Belleville 310. We purchased the Rocky C4T because of my DS's shoe size, availability and cost ($125 vs $155 for the others). When he got to Beast, he was told the Rocky C4T was no longer authorized. Apparently WP/Army made that decision sometime in June/late June but didn't notify new cadets. Originally he was told he couldn't wear the boots during Beast (he was issued one other pair -- I don't know the brand). Then a week or two into Beast, he was told he could wear the Rocky C4T for Beast only, but not after Beast was done.

To cadet candidates that have accepted their appointment, I strongly suggest you wait for the boot letter. If it's like last year, you will receive another pair of authorized boots at the beginning of Beast. I don't know how much my DS wore his Rocky boots during Beast, but I imagine they've been stored in his closet or locker since mid-August.

The M-8s are thick and heavy. It's 20 degrees out and my feet are sweating. I am not a sweaty-footed person by nature. The heel tread is very large, and if you're a natural pronator you'll find it affects your gait.

When in doubt, buy the Belleville 310s. The Army will never deauthorize that boot. It's an issue item.

I agree with this review of the Bates M-8 boot. My DS purchased a pair of these at the only Army installation close to us. On R-day his feet were measured and he was issued another pair of boots which he liked better than the Bates. He has worn at least 3 other types of boots during his 4 years at USMA and would never go back to the Bates due to the weight and large heel. He brought the Bates pair back to me during his first winter break. Since I wear the same size as he does I wear these boots all the time for outdoor work around the house. The boots are heavy, but they stand up to a lot of abuse very well. I can kick anything and not hurt my foot. I really like these boots since I'm old and slow no matter what I wear.
