My daughter received her BFE in the mail yesterday. Today she received a phone call from someone at the NA asking if she would be accepting her appointment. Has this happened to anyone else? I just thought it was a bit odd that they were calling to ask this question when I thought that they had some time to respond.

The same for us ealier this week. They called the same day DD received BFE. It was an easy answer for her - and she has already returned the acceptance notice. She received BFE from West Point, but will be respectfully declining. Big week in our house!

Congrats to your DD. Last year, my DS received a principal nom to USMA. Within a couple days he had been contacted by the secondary appointment to West Point. He was very interested to learn what my son's options were and how soon would he be making a decision. It was very awkward. Actually, sort of creepy. There is enough angst without having to feel that some other candidate's fate is in your hands.

This is just an opinion, but I'm guessing more DD's are being called than DS's in regards to their intentions. Qualified candidates that help the academies meet other specific enrichment targets are highly desirable. I'd consider the call as a compliment. Again, congrats to DD!

Ditto here. DD rec'd call from Admissions Wednesday asking if she'd gotten her appointment which showed up in the mail later that day. We'll take it as a compliment :). Funny thing was that the we'd dreamed about the various scenarios to break the news to our DD while we passed the time anxiously stalking the mailbox hoping for the BFE and a preemptive call from Admissions was not in the mix. Needless to say we were thrilled irrespective of how we got the good news. I don't recall if they asked her about acceptance or not- just one big happy blur. Congrats to you all and your DD's. See you at I-day.

Agreed here - compliment or whatever, it was a great day in our house. DD is thrilled, so we are for her - her heart is definitely in this - so she has our support 1000%!! See you on July 1st!

Last year was such a mess I'm guessing they aren't fooling around with stats this year and are actually counting noses.

I can't help but think that the longer we go with no word that the worse the odds are for a candidate. This waiting is killing me, especially when so many other kids are starting to hear.
DD doesn't seem too phased by the delay. I guess she didn't inherit my impatience.

Congrats to nj, my3 and clind!

Happened to DD today. She received a call from USNA Admissions asking if she was planning on accepting her appointment. She told them she was but hadn't yet received the BFE. A couple of hours later the BFE was in the mailbox (mailed Feb 5th, arrived Feb 13th). Good luck to all still waiting.

I THINK they are trying to get an early jump on "yield." They don't want to offer more appointments than they have slots. If people say they are turning down their appt, that in theory opens up another appointment. The converse is true of the person intends to accept.

If you are in this position, your verbal commitment isn't binding. But you'll do USNA -- and other applicants -- a favor if you answer honestly. If you haven't decided, it's ok to say so; they won't rescind your appointment!

Thank you to all for your responses!! Congratulations to those of you who received your Appointments and sit tight to those of you who are still waiting to hear! Our DD is certainly going to accept....well her dad did on her behalf her, but with pure confidence! I was just curious regarding the phone call as I had not heard of anyone receiving one. Thank you again for the reassurance that all is well! We are all still on cloud nine!

If you've got the time and the inclination you can read it all by going back to the post started on April 14th of last year titled 'Principal Nom-Wait List"

I think the biggest problem last year was the massive redistricting. The timing of redistricting coupled with when slates were due enabled some areas to fall under 2 districts during the application time frame. So, multiple slates were submitted for the same area, there for there were more principal noms than usual. Some early decisions were made in one district, only for redistricting to come along and put that appointee in another district that now had a different nominee named as principal. It was just a big logistical nightmare for USNA. It really looks like they are trying to keep anything like that from happening again this year.

This is just a curiosity question... I live in a district where our MOC submits a competitive slate. In my own humble opinion, I think this is the way to go. This way the Academy picks the best candidate based on all who apply. Why do MOCs want to do the primary thing? Why not let the Academy pick the best candidate? Otherwise it opens up a whole "bag of worms". This gives the MOC a chance to award a friend or big donor with an unfair advantage for a candidate who may not truly be the best qualified. I just think the primary or principal nom should not be allowed... Just does not make sense to me. Does anyone else feel this way?

The argument is that every congressional district in the US must be represented. An MOC or his panel could see excellent potential in a candidate that only came out in an interview. Perhaps the candidate is not outstanding on paper, but there is a quality to him that makes for an exceptionally qualified individual. Coupled with a stellar BGO interview and superior recommendations, the candidate who may not have had a shot because of test scores or early, poor performance in high school would now have a chance.

That being said, I agree with you. One would be naive to think that politics plays no role in the selection process. MOC's have retained the power of the primary nom because they want a large say in who represents their district. From my limited experience, a primary nomination is more commonly awarded to candidates who come from a background similar to that of the MOC.

Don't forget that if a nominee is not found scholastically qualified, they will not be getting an appointment. I would concur with mb1395, in that we (as U.S. citizens), hope that the MOCs will evaluate candidates on their own merits and not on "other" factors.

As we all know, a change to this process would be very difficult because it is in law -- you would have to petition the same people who want the principal nomination choice. USNA Admissions has said, they are not required to appoint the principal nominee, even if they are qualified. I am not sure of the legalities. Though, as a matter of practice, principal nominees NORMALLY (last year a big exception) get appointments.

May I ask what your DD's deciding factors were regarding picking Navy over USMA? Hoping my DD is in similar straights next year..

TriService2017 - I guess only DD could explain it properly, but she just felt that she belongs at USNA. Everything about her official visit felt right, the connection she felt with many of the people she met, etc. While she was overjoyed with receiving offers of appointment from both SAs, she knew what she wanted from the outset. Sorry I can't be more specific that this.

Did she attend any of the summer programs (SLE or NASS) at either SA? And by "official visit" do you mean CVW or was it a sports recruiting official visit?
