Hello for the first time, SAF,

I'm an applicant to USMMA for the class of 2019, and am eagerly awaiting some response from the admission's office. To my knowledge, my application (which included nom., passed CFA, all documents, etc) was reviewed sometime during the week of February 9th, as the Academy did inform me my application was complete and was up for review. My question is, when can I expext to hear back from the office? I understand that the office is under-manned and are at the apex of their work-season, but is there a reasonable time frame for me to expect a response? As always, thanks for (all of) your responses, and thank you to all Kings Pointer's, past and present.

Respectfully,
SpeckledTrout

Your response could come between late February and early/mid May. Most appointments are due to go out in late March and early April as the deadline is March 1. They have to offer appointments to the best qualified applicants from each state. Each state has a certain chair allotment which is outlined in CFR 46 (Anyone have the link?). They are probably going to wait until everyone applies from your state and see how you stack up. Some people don't hear until May. These are people who get in off their state lists/the national list because their were openings in the class. Others are offered Prep School, but the Prep School slots are usually for athletes and URMs, but it's uncommon for an applicant for a lot of potential to get one. About 40 sponsored NMMI slots given by USMMA each year.

I'm in the same position. Completed my application at the end of January and now I wait.

Jmoney457,

Are you on "hold" status, or rather have recieved no communications since your submission?

Stats are 1360 SAT 720M/640V top 5% of my class and a bunch of college level work that averages out to 3.75 or so.

Jmoney457,
I am in pretty much the exact same spot as you (as far as the app. process goes). At this point, it is impossible to know whether or not we are on out respective state's lists. I do get the feeling that we will get more information when all applications are reviewed in early March.

ALCON,
What is the Academy's way of reaching out to their appointees? Is it a call from their MOC, a simple online app. status change, etc.?

Thank you,
-SpeckledTrout

Speckled Trout,

The status on the online login will change from app on file to principal or LOA depending on whether or not you're clear by DoDMERB

I'm from Texas and I think we are a little late. If you're from Texas, California, New York, etc... I think the chances of us being appointed are pretty low and the plan B will probably be the one traveled this go around.

Jmoney457,

I'm from Pennsylvania (PA), and am 100% cleared by the DoDMERB. From what I understand, plenty of applicants receive appointments later (than March). I really can't know, but thanks for the email.

Thanks,
SpeckledTrout

Everything is in for me. Hopefully I get a appointment from the Hold List. Does anyone know the rough number they appoint off the hold list each year? I'm from CA. BTW What is everyone's Plan B? Mine is Mass. Maritime, doing SSOP and majoring in Marine Transportation.

My DS is also on HOLD at KP. If not offered an appointment his Plan B is to attend SUNY Maritime, major in Marine Engineering, and to sign up for the SSOP program as well. Good luck to you!

How about California Maritime??

I can only go by what happened with my DS last year. He received a call from MOC telling him he received an appointment. Not all MOC's do this. My DS portal changed to PRINCIPAL and a few days later he received the BFE.

To Usnavy2019, "Does anyone know the rough number they appoint off the hold list each year?" That is hard to say and I believe only somebody from admissions can give an opinion on that and I am sure it changes year to year depending on the applicants from state to state.

Best of luck to all of you.

BuckeyeGuy,
What was the timeline for your DS? To rephrase, when did he submit his full application, hear from his MOC?

Thanks,
SpeckledTrout

My DS had his app in (if I remember correctly) early Sept. He received an LOA Nov, after MOC interviews, sent MOC copy of LOA. He received letters from Senator and Congressman (phone call from Congressman too) Dec, Portal changed in Dec to Principal and his appointment letter was dated Jan accepted appointment Jan.

DS received TWE from USNA (his 3rd choice) late April.

Hope that sheds some light. Until you are told yes or no...you are still in the game...waiting is the hardest part no doubt..even for us parents.

Again best wishes and keep the faith - by the way, if you get a prep slot take it.

I heard back from Merchant about a week ago - declined. App says "declined - not qualified". Got the actual letter a few days ago :/

So sorry about your news. Don't give up! The Maritime Academies are an excellent backup plan. And depending on the reasons for your decline status maybe one of the prep academies are an option? Maybe others here can elaborate?
