While I was attending the USAFA Summer Seminar, I noticed a number of cadets who had been trained as Emergency Medical Technicians, and were out and about during our activities. I was wondering if anyone had any information as to how a cadet goes about receiving this training, and what different duties they could participate in as an EMT.

I was a cadet EMT back in the day. The applications opened up at the end of freshman year and cadets were selected. We received our training during the fall semester of sophomore year.

Once certified, we were on duties during intramural sports, football games, parades, training activities, basic training etc. there were other odds and ends where there were requests for us as well. I did one summer block as an EMT for basic training as well.

What did the application and training entail for you?

I have some buddies going through the training right now. They opened up applications at the end of the year for rising 3 and 2-digs (I think a short personal statement and an interview process were included) but they didn't start training until this semester. They have training every other day for a few hours in the afternoon and most Saturdays as well. Once they're certified they'll start showing up at all the activities hornetguy mentioned. It's a pretty good deal if you can make the time for it...it's going to be a lot of studying during the semester that will be hard to balance with 18+ credits.

No idea what the student athletic trainer thing is that you're talking about.

what if the Cadet is already EMT certified? my DS is CO2019 and is currently finishing up his EMT certification. it would be nice if he could actually put it to good use.

great question! My DS is an EMT and working on his EMT Advanced certification.....

Lol I just gotta say, I am always impressed at the others coming into the Class of 2019 and the accomplishments they have under their belts. EMT certified, or private pilot's license, already completed their Associates...I am intimidated by my future classmates because they are SO AWESOME!!!

If they're already EMT certified, they can get involved directly with the program, although I think they have to wait until sophomore year. I have a friend who did this-instead of going through all the training he started working as an EMT for intramurals, formations, etc, right after freshman year was over.

Thanks!!! We will check that out next week when we visit the academy. I know that my DS wants to get involved with that.
