Just out of curiosity: DS is a contracted AROTC MSI and will be attending CIET this summer. He has not yet found out any other details. Does anyone know about how much that pay will be? Also, is transportation to and from paid for?
Do contracted cadets earn the AROTC stipend over the summer, or is that only paid during the school year?

The AROTC stipend is not paid during the summer. I think travel to and from CIET would be reimbursed/paid, DS' had his travel to Ft. Knox for CULP deployment covered last year. As to payment for attending CIET, not really sure although if paid I think it would probably be similar to CULP payments (which were very slowly and originally incorrectly distributed last year) which was around $30.00/day. - Bull- might know...

Not entirely sure about CIET, but as cadre I was informed I will be compensated for being at Ft. Knox. I believe the pay is around $30 or so a day (if it's similar to CULP pay). MSIII's are historically the only year group that gets paid over the summer due to mandatory summer training, but that may change if CIET is mandatory for freshmen. The army will handle transportation. Contracted cadets that aren't MSIII's haven't earned a stipend over the summer, as it's intended to simply be subsistence money during the year while away from home. That's why you usually only earn a fraction of your stipend during December and March/April, to compensate for spring break and Christmas.

$33.89/day is the Cadet Summer Training pay rate. You'll draw the stipend, if I remember correctly, 10 months a year, and you can't get the stipend and training pay at the same time. That rate could be subject to change too, but that was it last year.

Edit: Due to system requirements, MS3's and MS4's won't stop getting paid during the summer (the system apparently can't stop their pay like the 1's and 2's), so it will look as though they are drawing both the training pay and stipend at the same time. Have no fear, the army will get what it wants back, and has a very high success rate in that department.

Travel to and from all training will be taken care of. You'll get orders and all that jazz, and the HRT at your school will book all of the travel arrangements through DTS.

Thanks everyone! That is helpful for his planning for what he may be able to earn over the summer. If we were to go down for the graduation, would his gas money home be paid for, or does he have to fly?

I thought we weren't getting paid because the army only pays for training over 30 days

Sure hope that is not true USN16x! Does anyone have any idea as to when the orders with actual dates will come through? My DS will be working for his dad this summer and my DH is chomping at the bit trying to plan when he will need additional help so he can let them know.

I'm not sure if I follow this correctly. Are you referring to him driving to Knox? Unless you're located really close, that probably won't be an option, but yes, if he had to drive to training he would get paid a mileage rate. Every time I ever flew somewhere the army paid my mileage from my HOR (Home of Record) to the airport.

More info would be in his orders. I wouldn't suggest driving as an option unless Knox is in your backyard.

*When I refer to a paid mileage rate, I'm speaking in terms of reimbursement. Just for clarity.

I meant if we drive down at the end for the graduation and family day, and he drives home with us - would there be a mileage allowance for that? We are a good 12 hours away, but have relatives in the area to visit and then we would go to the graduation. He may rather fly home than drive for that long anyhow!

I'm not completely sure on that so I don't want to give you a bad answer. It would be a reach. If that is the option, he'll be able to work all of that out with his HRT.

Thanks! Now the wait for the dates so we can see if we can even go down for the graduation.

USN16x, you (or your son/daughter) will still be paid even though it's under 3o days. Summer training cadets (formerly LDAC) were always paid, even though training was 28 days. It's not a whole ton of money, but certainly nice to come back to a non-empty bank account.

As for travel, the army pays for your airline ticket if you fly(they book for you) and will reimburse you for gas money to/from the airport, or your gas if you drive (if under a certain mileage. You will be reimbursed, not paid up front. You'll be paid a certain amount of money per mile traveled).

We drove to Knox to attend LTC graduation and drove DS home to upstate NY. DS was reimbursed for milage. I didn't see a dime

Soundchaser_frank....that is sort of like the book stipend and uniform allowance money....I imagine the gas money will be the same for us also!

I thought we weren't getting paid because the army only pays for training over 30 days

Just because the course is less than 30 days doesn't mean you won't be on orders for less than 30 days. LDAC was 29 days in course length, but then you factor in 2 days of travel (1 on each end) and that gets you 31 days on orders.

He has a 4 yr scholarship. The uniform allowance was paid just like the book stipend and monthly stipend. We have a Uniform Fee we pay to the SMC for the Corps of Cadets uniforms (Stipend in no way covers that! Makes a dent.Well, it should make a dent...).
