Last year I applied for the class of 2018 and I didn't get in. I wasn't the most excellent candidate, but I would consider myself competitive for the most part, being triple qualified. I went to NASS which was most definitely a great experience and further solidified my decision to want to apply. Anyways, I was eventually denied in mid april and needless to say I was crushed. At first this was one of the worst things that could happen to me, but now, as I am in my 2nd semester of freshman year, things are not as bad as I thought they'd be. I feel like I am getting the experience and education that I wanted.

I won't lie and say that there isn't a time where I think about how my life would be if I were at the academy, but going to a "regular" college is just as great. What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter where you go. As long as you have drive and ambition you will be successful anywhere. Life is what you make of it and if your goal is an academy, re-apply. Personally I didn't, but out of the 5 people I know who re-applied, all of them received an appointment.

Take it from someone who received a TWE, not going to the academy isn't the end of the world.

It is nice of you to post those of us still stalking the mailman that there is life outside of the USNA. Did you do ROTC?

Thank you for your post ayp. My DD is already thinking of 2020's application and asking her senior teacher's for letters of recommendations as she expects a TWE. I think the key is a solid, very solid, plan B which you had. When you analyze the stats, you realize how slim a chance you have to get in-plan B is a must. I was told of someone who did not get into USMA and did not have a plan B at all and sunk into a serious depression. Wound up at Community College (no offense to CC-it is a stepping stone), but he wasn't emotionally put together enough to handle that either. Serious plan B and C need to happen. Thanks

Yea, the Plan B is a very important thing from what I've seen. For my fellow applicants, if I get a TWE, big whoop. I go to a civilian school, have fun with Marine Option NROTC, and reapply. If it took a POTUS multiple applications to get in, I'm not worried.

This is seriously one of the most emotionally helpful posts I have read. My son is still waiting to hear from both USMA and USNA. He has several strong plan B's (honors programs with full tuition). Last night I was thinking that if plan B is the one, that he will probably have the time of his life, and may not even want to reapply to USNA or USMA. All I know is that at this point only God knows where he will be in July- WE certainly don't, and wherever that place may be, it was MEANT to be! Again, thank you so much for your encouraging words.

Exactly, he'll end up in a great spot no matter what

Well this was a great post and I really wish I could have seen this two years ago. I have wanted to go to USNA my entire life. I originally applied for the class of 2017. I was denied and decided to attend regular college. I did the NROTC and college was actually pretty great. However, if you are like me you will still have a fire in your soul to attend USNA. I applied for class of 2018, and I was denied again. I dropped my fraternity, worked fewer hours, took more leadership positions, took harder classes, and started my third application. January 30, 2015 I got the call from my senator that I have been dreaming of since I was a little kid. If you do not get in the first time, try again. If you don't get in the second time, try again. I would have applied as many times as it took. Good luck to everyone and if you have any questions inbox me. I've played the waiting game three times and I know how you feel

sempersurf17 - That's a great story! I'm sure your perseverance and maturity will serve you really well at USNA and in your Navy career. Have some fun these next few months (but not too much! ha, ha). Good luck with Plebe summer and beyond.

As a college reapplicant, I've been through the process before. Having a strong plan B really is necessary. I applied to over 10 schools, including USNA, and after receiving the TWE in March last year, enrolled at Ohio State. Having a good plan B in line really made things easier when my chances started looking slimmer and slimmer.
