Appointee Tours

I looked online and they are April 3rd and 17th...I emailed the academy asking how to set mine up. Also does anyone know if an overnight is an option?

Has anyone heard when Appointee Tours are being made available?

I received an email about a tour after receiving my appointment and it had four dates (April 3rd,13th,17th, and 20th)

Here is some co tact info that was attached with the invite. Maybe you can contact them and inquire about attending if you're an appointee.

United States Air Force Academy | 2304 Cadet Dr, Ste 2400 | USAF Academy | CO | 80840 | US | 1-800-443-9266

I'm not sure if you are asking if the tour could be over night because the schedule is from 8am-3pm and only lasts a day. With that said, I registered to attend the third, I'm flying in on the 2nd and leaving the 5th so I can do some sight seeing and info gathering.

I realize the schedule says that it is a day long event, but I know people who have stayed overnight and I wondered if that was an option...

Ohh, I missunderstood your question, I thought you mean overnight in Colorado. As far as overnight tours go, I'm not sure.

I believe you can request an overnight stay but probably not during an appointee tour. USAFA usually doesn't do the overnight thing like the USNA CVW. I think it has to do with trying not to disrupt cadet life too much.

Having said that, the answer is always "no" if you don't ask.

My son is on the fence, so we have signed up for the April 3rd tour. It asks if he has accepted his appointment or not; any idea why they ask that? He put no.

Thanks

When DD and I went to the appointee tour last March, there were only about 1/2 that had accepted.
They have a briefing at the start where they talk about all sorts of things to expect, but they emphasize that you should only be at USAFA if YOU want to be there. No hard sell or anything like that. So, no, you don't have to accept the appointment to go to the tour.

I think they ask because they want to know it they should gear part of the tour toward helping people to make the decision.

BTW, if you've already accepted and the upperclassman you've been assigned knows it, you just might get a small, tiny taste of what's to come. DD actually heard the "if you make it that far" comment when sitting in a physics class with her guide.

What do you mean by "if you make it that far" comment? Oh, and congrats on all of the academy people you have in your life, amazing!

From what I've heard, BCT will be a mental game for us and by telling us "if you make it that far" is more or less to push us to endure the challenge. As in a mentality that says "the cadre says IF I make it, well I shall show them that its when I make it" you know, to push you to work harder and be stronger. Idk about you but when people doubt me, I strive to make them not doubt me. I assume that's what the comment means and what it is meant to bring out in the cadets, also there is a lot that could happen between now and June 25th which could cost us our appointments, so it may also reference that.

BTW: When our DD visited for the tour, she wore business casual. Even though it was March, the weather that day was sunny & 75 degrees. She wore her hair down, but put it up in a bun in order to fit in.

Good to know! I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose being there in civvies would make one feel odd. Were there a lot of other appointees on her tour? Did the clothing she wore fit pretty well with the dress of the other appointees?
Also, for those of us who went to Summer Seminar, do you think that wearing the blue polo they gave us would attract any negative attention? I feel that this is an appropriate clothing option, but don't want to seem cocky like "I'm already a part of this" when I know I have a looooong way to go before I am.

As Rogers said, there are quite a few mental challenges. You (and they) need to know if you can handle the pressure of the job. Some can, some can't. The comment "if you make it that far" will be heard often. For instance, you might hear someone way "You'll get your boards at Acceptance ... if you make it that far." It can get infuriating, but that's the point, isn't it?

If nothing else, remember this: You WILL fail at something during BCT. The cadre will ensure it. They have to for a couple of reasons:
Most of you brilliant, amazing people have never failed at anything in life. How will you know if you can overcome that (will you fall apart)? How can you show the men/women under your command any compassion and understanding should they fail? You need to learn to overcome adversity & challenges that may seem to difficult to overcome. The best part? Most of you will succeed at this!

Yes her outfit fit in with the others. There were about 20-25 candidates/appointees there that day, about 75% male. Most were from Az. & Tx. It started off with a powerpoint presentation with the parents in attendance, followed by a short Q & A session, then the kids went to class with the Cadets to spend the day in classes. For lunch, she had chicken fried steak for the first time, and had to ask what it was, wondering why the gravy was white. The top comment was, "I guess you are not from around here!"
