Is there a chance?

I have just accepted a foundation scholarship. Is there still a chance that after the initial appointments are accepted and if they still have room will they extend offers to NAPS and foundation kids? If so will NAPS kids be considered first?

Probably not because usually NAPS and Foundation kids have been deemed to need more academic work. However, this a great route to an appointment so embrace the opportunity and you will join the C/O 2020!

My brother was a foundation student and later graduated from the Academy. Looking back he has said he is happy he had to wait a year. He met kids at his foundation school also going to the Academy and they are now his best friends. He has also said the extra year of academic help and just growing up in general helped him greatly at the Academy. He graduated in the top of his class and first in his class of flight school. He speaks very favorably of the Foundation Program. Congrats on the awesome opportunity.

It is extremely rare for someone to be offered NAPS or Foundation then an appointment in the same year. There were a few threads on this a few weeks ago. As HopefulMid19 mentioned, Foundation is an amazing opportunity. It is as close of a guarantee as you will get to a golden ticket the next year. Those who attend Foundation tend to do very well at USNA. The Prep schools Navy uses are all very well established and have a great track record preparing candidates for USNA. There are a variety of schools to choose from, some are military, others are not. Research them carefully and choose one where you thin you would succeed the most.

If anybody knows (probably a BGO), what is the nominal number of Foundation students who are awarded appointments each year? And NAPS?

Are you talking about appointments to USNA after foundation/NAPS? If so, I want to say about 90% of the NAPS Battalion receive appointments (~225), and I believe maybe about 50 foundation scholarships.

With regard to Foundation sponsored students appointed to USNA c/o 2018, from the ASP Newsletter on the USNA Foundation website:

"Of the 45 original Foundation sponsored prep school students, 38 (25 men and 13 women) became midshipmen on Induction Day for an outstanding 85 percent success rate."

This is what I've heard. I was curious whether it had changed much over the years - particularly the foundation candidates, with which I am less familiar.

This brings up a rather elucidating point, although it is certainly not very encouraging to those who seek admission to the Naval Academy. In an average Plebe class of 1200 (although, during eras of downsizing, it is trending toward less than 1200), 275 of those spots are already taken by NAPS/foundation candidates. That leaves 925 vacancies. Some of those are recruited athletes with the academic credentials for direct admission without the necessity of a preparatory school. They are going to get an appointment one way or another. I don't know how many that is - maybe 100? That estimate may be a bit low. That leaves a little over 800 vacancies remaining with nearly 20,000 applicants.

It has been said to many who earn an appointment, "That's the easy part. The next four years will be the hard part." Statistically, that is untrue. Roughly 7% of those who apply earn an appointment. Roughly 85% of those who earn an appointment go on to graduate.

NAPS Class of 2015 started with 251 and is currently at 240. If the Napster fails a class or has a gpa below 2.2 they will not get an appointment. Could be 15-20 of those struggling right now.

From the Class of 2018 Class Portrait:
http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/_files/documents/ClassPortrait.pdf

Former enlisted total 67 from direct and NAPS. See the link above for details on students with a military background.

The Class of 2018 includes 342 (29%) from college and post-high school preparatory programs which include:
  • 225 from Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI
  • 6 from the Navy Nuclear Power Program
  • 41 from the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation Program (22 from prep schools and 19 from colleges)
  • 69 additional students have completed at least one semester of study at a college or university
