My son has applied and been accepted to the NASS session 1 (starts May 30). He is in school until June 12. His exams will be during and after NASS. He is also the 1st string goalie of his soccer team, which will be competing in state tournament during this time as well (We just received this information). We wanted to ensure his acceptance, so we stated on the application that he would be available for any session. Does it look bad to now go back and ask if there is any way to change sessions? Is this ever done, and would it have any adverse effects on his application? Is it seen as "bad form"?

You can switch sessions! Unfortunately, he would have to forfeit his spot in session 1 in order to be put on the waiting list for another session. Being selected off the waiting list is not guaranteed. You just have to email USNA admissions about switching. I got into Session 1 too, pretty sure they're trying to fill it up with people who said they were available that day because so many aren't. I wish you the best of luck!

Yikes! I'm sort of scared of pulling him out of session 1 if he may not get into another session. He seems to think it may be worth it. He thinks that the important bit is that he has been accepted into it, not necessarily that he attends. I guess we have to weigh the importance of attending vs. effect on exam grades/ athletic status for his application.

I was originally accepted into session 3, but realized I couldn't attend that session so I switched to session 2 and was notified that I got into the session within two days! It was really fast and they were extremely accommodating!

When did you switch over? Because I might need to switch for WP SLE, and I think the earlier I switch, the better.

Being accepted into it and not going has no value. Going to the seminar will not help you get into the academy either, the academy doesn't care if you went to the seminar or not or if you were accepted to the seminar or not. The purpose of going is really to find out whether the academy is the right place for you, not to improve your application. If your son wants to improve his application by going to a camp, he should consider attending Boys State.

IMO you should ask to switch sessions. It's not worth sacrificing grades and athletic participation to attend the seminar. Also, the soccer coach might be the one writing your son a letter of recommendation one day too and I don't think he would appreciate your son bailing on the team during the playoffs.

Last year DS attended session 1-- landing on finals week. He spoke with his counselor and asked about the possibility of taking finals a week early. She was very supportive and had DS speak with his teachers, they all accommodated him. One of his teachers created a final just for DS, the topic: The History of the Naval Academy.

Anyway, DS missed the last seven days of school for NASS, and had a blast.

I realize this doesn't help in your decision in regards to soccer-especially playing in a state tournament.

Good luck and all the best to your DS.

Being accepted or rejected from NASS is not an indication nor prediction of how one will do in the Admissions process.

I switched over about 3 weeks ago! I would definitely ask to switch as soon as you make a decision!! Good luck!

Thank you! We went ahead and asked for a switch. I just didn't want to take any chances. Your post helped me decide-- it's what my son wanted anyway. He has been to USNA for Stem and a candidate weekend, and definitely wants to attend if accepted. But if he does get to switch, I think it will give him a more accurate view of Midshipman Life. Thanks again.
