This is kind of a specific question, but I have this backpack, which I want to use when I arrive at the Academy and during the school year. I know it has to be black or dark blue, but will I be given any grief about the white coloring? Do I need to take a Sharpie to it?

Also, long time lurker, first time poster. I'd like to express my appreciation for this forum, which has helped me more times than I can count. Thank you so much, and thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to answer my question!

Target, you will be issued a backpack, with your own name on it... which you will gladly and conscientiously carry in your left hand, only, during your 4* year. Go ahead and buy the backpack, take it to i-day, retrieve it after BCT, and keep it in your storage locker for four years.

It can't be said enough...you will be issued everything you need, aside from items on the very brief packing list. Avoid bringing extra and drawing attention to yourself. Academies have been doing this for a long time, and know exactly what you'll need, and it will be given to you at the proper time.

Hang in there 2019...the waiting is the worst part. First for your appointment, then for I-Day, then finishing BCT...etc, etc. you are going to get really good at the "hurry up and wait" game.

Two things:
1. Unless it's changed since I went through, it doesn't really matter what color your backpack is for I-Day. I wouldn't bring something obnoxiously colored, but the one you posted a picture of should be fine for the purpose of I-Day. Just go by whatever guidance they give you in your appointee booklet.
2. I'm attaching the guidance for school year backpacks from our regulations below. I would say that backpack is probably outside of the regs just because all of the white on the straps. I encourage anyone who wants to use their own backpack, however, to do so. I hated the issued backpacks and spending a little money on a sturdier bag I preferred was one of the best purchases I made last year.

"Issued blue USAFA or plain, solid black backpacks may be carried in left hand, over left or both shoulders while in AF blue uniform. Backpacks are not to be worn over both shoulders while in service dress uniform or parade uniform. Backpacks may be carried in left hand, over left or both shoulders while in ABUs. Issued blue USAFA, plain, solid black, olive drab, or sage green backpacks may be carried in left hand, over left or both shoulders while in ABUs. No other colors or any color combination of backpacks carried. Issued blue USAFA backpack is not to be altered in appearance (e.g., affixing patches or pins, etc.). Bags or backpacks will not be worn with shoulder straps across chest in any uniform combination. Conservative logo authorized."

My sons still have and use their USAFA backpacks.

Yep, a lot of cadets use the issued ones. It's very much a personal thing. Carrying a personal one during the school year won't cause you to receive any extra attention or anything, though.

Is carrying in your left hand a personal backpack allowed for 4-degrees?

Ahh, remember when USAFA used to be hard?

Fixed that for you!

2019s, don't worry about bringing backpacks. Just put what you need for I-day in a box.

But if you choose not to heed this advice, you'll be fine. There's a good chance you'll use one of the backpacks your issued, but if it doesn't float your boat, it's probably not a big deal.

fencersmom, i was going to post that pick when i got home from work, you beat me to it LOL.

Boxes are fine, but if you're a girl you might consider wearing some really cute peep toe pumps. Gotta look good when you're scurrying about that first day....

Here's another pro tip from a young grad that is reliving memories and has only 2019 appointee's best interest in mind:

If by chance you have an opportunity to do a hometown hero interview with your local paper, share all your aspirations. If you want to go to USAFA, then to UPT, track astronaut and be the first person to step foot on Mars, by golly, share it! Because remember, USAFA is a small stepping stone to your larger goals. It'll work well for you!

(don't actually do the above)

That backpack will be abaolutely fine, I've seen lots of cadets with very similar, if not the exact same, backpack. For 4-Deg year you will most likely be allowed to use your own backpack, I've never heard of a squad that couldn't, but make sure the handle is suited to carrying it around all day! If not, take some duct tape and make a nice handle for yourself. I'd say about half of the cadets here use the issued backpack. You should get a nice laptop backpack from Swiss gear, and another blue backpack with your name on it. I use a navy jansport backpack because I thought the other two were too bulky, but I still use the issued one for the gym.

Good to know shellz! I was thinking of buying those adorable pumps I saw in the mall the other day to go with my little black dress and cute dangly earrings I was saving for I-Day! ;)
TOTALLY kidding haha!

If I remember right Mars Boy didn't make it past 4 dig year. Lesson learned from that one.... Be humble.

Also, lock down your social media now. Anything you or your friends share on your social media sites can be used against you. This includes anything shared on your wall or photos/posts you are tagged in. I can't emphasize this enough! I had long chats with my kids in high school regarding social media and the college application process...they didn't want to be that kid who is being considered for entry or a scholarship only for the college admissions to find something inappropriate on their site. One of my kids never had a social media account and the other seriously limited/restricted his while in high school. Your friends might experience grins and giggles when they tag you in that post where you are wearing a funny costume or making a duck face or doing something incredibly silly, but you may not find it that funny if cadre comes across it during BCT.

Do you think it's okay to stick around on this site if we don't use our full names? Other than this forum, I don't have Facebook or anything.... Do they check out parents'/ siblings' FB?
