Hi,

If I accept my ROTC scholarship (4 year to UT) by may 1st am I legally obligated to do ROTC at UT? Can I back out?

I havent read the contract but there's no way to force a student to comply. If you received any money, you would need to pay it back. Plus, don't expect another ROTC scholarship.

This is not entirely correct.

No you are not obligated to ROTC at UT until you sign the contract.

Yes you can back out even after you start the program. You can leave AROTC at anytime up to the first day of your sophomore year without any obligation to the Army and would not be required to pay back your first years scholarship. If you start your sophomore year and then drop out there is an obligation of either enlistment or payback which you do not get to choose, the Army will choose for you, unless they give you the option of both.

You can accept additional ROTC Scholarships, example...if your son has applied to all three AROTC, AFROTC, NROTC, and is offered a scholarship from all of them, he can accept all of them. Once he makes his decision of which one to go with he would simply then decline the other offers.

I would also add that ROTC also has their back out option too. Dont pass the PFT and they wont contract you. Not saying to use this as an option because as others have said you can leave anytime you want with no obligation during your freshmen year. Just like they are under no obligation to pay your tuition, books or stipend until you pass the PFT. every fall there are posts about how cadets bust it on their first shot. If you decide you are going to move forward with ROTC make sure you continue to train during the summer in all types of weather.
