In sunny Florida on beach son says "tell me again why I joined the Army?"

Many conversations with senior son over last 2 years about SAs, Coast Guard, USNA, West Point, and ROTC. Knowing son I highlighted Navy and Coast Guard a little more but he decided Army ROTC was best choice for him and did receive national scholarship. Two weeks ago left snow on the ground up North and family went on vacation in South Florida. 85 degrees, sunny and beautiful-go to pool; go to beach; play tennis; eat out; repeat. Coast Guard station 200 yards from the beach, which apparently finally makes son realize Navy and Coast Guard have many locations in beautiful, warm, sunny, areas of the country. On 5th day of sitting on the beach in paradise, gazing at pretty girls, and the Coast Guard Station, and knowing he will be returning to cold and snow up north, and will go to school there for next 4 years, son turns to me, smiles and and says “Tell me again why I chose the Army and to stay in the North?”
 
It'll be when he is sitting on a Joint Base gazing at the Air Force accommodations and chow hall that he'll really wonder why he joined the Army.:biggrin:
 
He's aware of Schofield Barracks, no? The Air Force part of Florida is by far the grossest part. That CG station in Miami, though...
 
If he went Navy he would probably end up on some sub doing arctic cruises! No daylight AND cold!
 
Army has a lot of bases in the South, most are far from beaches. It is not so fun being at Ft Benning ,Ruck Marching in the 10o% Humidity at 110 degrees. You miss the cold then.
 
^^^Yes. It'll be really sunny and "warm" in August (actually May-September) when he's a young LT at Fort Hood. And the beach is only ...250 miles away.

Yep, my son has just Hated being in Hawaii, having to buy extra sun screen, dry skin from all the time in the ocean.....it's been horrible. They do keep them pretty busy at Wheeler though.

Spent some time at CG Station Miami, missed it as soon as I left. The only thing is that for every one that is lucky enough to be in Miami, San Diego, Hawaii, and so on, there are even more that are in Alaska, Oregon, and the Northeast, freezing there you know whats off.
 
That's why you branch Aviation or Ordinance/EOD, those summer weekends in Panama Beach and Destin are really nice.
 
I've lived in Northeast Ohio all my life. The cold doesn't really bother me. You can always bundle up against the cold but hot is hot and when its 90+ degrees it's terrible. There's no air conditioning outside when you're running

My son is all over Navy EOD right now....sigh. Hoping it's just a 4/c phase. The ONLY good thing about that is that my parents have a place in Destin so he'd get free meals every now and then...but ugh! LOL
 
I'm one of the few Florida natives, born and raised in central Florida. Part of the reason I'm doing Army ROTC is to get out of this state.

Only 4 more years to go....

I love this thread because it is hysterical. It is the camaraderie that exists between branches....tweaking each other for fun.

Why go AF?
Because PT is a round of golf, carrying your bags.
Because they have bankers hours!
Because TDY means Vegas baby!
Because they typically don't jump out of perfectly good airplanes!

Why not go AF?
Because Minot is a factor. Freezin is the reasone!
Because Del Rio, aka Hell Rio exists!
Chances of getting Hawaii like Jcleppe's DS right off the bat as an aviator is slim to none, but being assigned to Mt. Home, Seymour or Dyess are pretty high!
~~ Our 1st assignment was Mt. Home. Hub of Elmore county with less than 9K people.
~~~ Funny thing....most towns don't want to hear the roar of jets.

Maybe just me, but I think the CG is the best.
~ There is no option of being sent to Camp Red Cloud or Kunsan. No option of deploying for 179 days +/-
~ No option of landlocked.

Than again, I am an AF family.
 
Agreed Midwest! My DS couldn't wait to get out of Kansas (and go to NY). He hopes to go to South Korea in 3 yrs. I suggested Hawaii, Italy or Germany. Hopefully the cards are in his favor then and he doesn't get Fort Riley (Kansas) ... for his sake, not mine.

Can't agree more! Never in my life did I think I would be going to Texas as frequently as I am, but here I am! Next week I will be in Abilene Texas.

LMAO. Korea is great for a wife (knock offs), but to this day Bullet bears through eating any Asian food. I swear I don't know the last time we ate even Chinese food. Flip side, he has no problem with South West Asian (Turkish, Greek, Indian, etc).

Italy was never in our cards, but luckily we did live overseas, thus it was in our vacay cards.
 
Thought I would post to represent Coast Guard and our great 49th state of Alaska! Kodiak, Sitka, Juneau, etc...all wonderful, beautiful places. Yes, it can get cold, but the communities are close and the Coast Guard is very well respected in Alaska. Both of my DDs are hoping to return upon commissioning. BTW, it's forecast to be in the 60s here outside of Anchorage this next week... :). Also, Anchorage is home to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson...so Air Force and Army are a very large community here. Now Eielson (AF) and Fort Wainwright (Army) in Fairbanks... now that's cold!:eek:

Mosquitos are our state bird! In all seriousness, I've lived all over the Lower 48 and I would much rather deal with the mosquitos than the multitude of critters in the Lower 48...like snakes, and big bugs (Florida), etc. The thing about Alaska is you are no longer top of the food chain. Always travel with a buddy, and make sure they run slower than you!:D Oh and not much of a "spring thaw"...that happened like in January this year...very little snow (set a record) and above average temps.
