AFROTC Injury Question

Good Morning All! I am an AS200 that received a rated nontech EA for this summer. I recently had an injury to my foot that limits me from performing to my potential physically. I talked to the Colonel and he said there is a possibility to defer field training to the next summer. In addition I also received a 2.5 year ICSP scholarship and have yet to contract. I have not took my PT test this semester yet either. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice on what I should do and what the potential outcomes are?

I would have a sit down with the CoCs.
~ How will deferment work? Will you have to meet another SFT board or will you be considered a medical turnback?
~ 2.5 means to me that you need to take that PFT this semester to contract. If you don't contract does that mean your scholarship will be thrown back to HQ and you have to fight for it again next fall, or will they give you some type of waiver.

Our PFA is this Tuesday and I can push through and get a 90. I took a practice test and that is what I got. For deferment I would take my EA and just go next year. We have another cadet that has had medical issues and has done the same thing. I plan on sitting down with the Colonel this week and discussing it a little more with him.

The outcome of deferring FT is that you will receive a 0 out of 5 on your Field Training Performance Score when it comes to the Rated Board. It isn't much of a factor if you have other aspects to compensate it. If you do defer understand that you will be going to Max 1 or 2 the earliest Max you can go. You may also have no FTP training so you will have to prepare for FT by yourself.

I've been doing FTP all semester and I know I'm welcome back next year to all the sessions. I have no problem with what max I get either considering I actually prefer 1 or 2. My GPA is 3.4, pfa 98.5, and AFOQT pilot 85 so I have the stats to compensate a little. The main thing I want to know is how to I keep the scholarship? Take the PFA this Tuesday and then fill out my form for my injury since it isn't technically reported yet?

Do what the CoC says.

Lets say you do the PT, injure your foot even more, maybe requiring minor surgery which could mean a DoDMERB DQ for months on end.

Just my opinion, but this is truly an issue that I would heed the CoCs advice, not anonymous posters where they are not in the HQ AFROTC loop.

I'm more intelligent than that. I'm just looking for some ideas since I have zero knowledge. Like I said, I'm talking to the CoC this week.

May I ask what kind of ideas?

You are either going to be able to pass that PFT for the scholarship or not.

This really impo is a case by case.

I hope for the best, but since you are nontech, I would be getting in front of this now with the CoC, because the last I knew you had to be a POC for 3 semesters.
~ If you go next summer and if I am correct than your graduation date has to be pushed back by 6 months, and that means HQ is in the equation again.

Here's how injuries work. Your commander can give you up to 30 days of no/limited PT because of an injury without getting DoDMERB involved. Most still like to have documentation. After 30 days, the injury must be reported to DoDMERB and you must have documentation of the injury as well as your recovery. So right now, have you seen a doctor? Do you have a diagnosis? If not, you are definitely not going to be able to not go to FT this summer. If you only want this because you think you might be able to do the PFA better next year, just go to FT now. Fix the medical issue now because that is the most important thing. Anyway, work it out with your commander.

I've been in contact with my CoC and it isn't because I think I can do better on the PFA later. I don't think I would be able to make it through FT if I just pushed it. I took my 30 days off from PT and have since started up but cannot perform to my max. I recently had an MRI done and one doctor said he thought I had a tarsal coalition. Another doc said the report was confusing and that he would like to take a further look. So that is where we are now. Like I said I can get a 90-92 on my PFA so I'm thinking I will do that, inquire with my CoC further, possibly contract, and defer FT.

If you defer SFT, will you still be able to graduate on time?

I asked the Colonel about that and he said he would look into it. The other cadet who is currently doing it didn't so there's that. Also he said I would attend AS300 classes and have a POC position. He said the only difference would be that I wouldn't be able to contract since I didn't go through SFT. Now I know about the scholarship so I don't know how this changes the situation. If I complete my PFA tomorrow could I then contract and report the issue to DODMERB? I'm currently waiting on the written results so I couldn't report it if I wanted to. Also the doc said there is no real recovery time, it's just how much I can perform without pain.

That is interesting.

I always thought you could not be a POC unless you completed SFT, thus the reason AS500 exists. I would have assumed, and we know what that means; you would be a 500. Maybe 500s are considered POCs, and that would mean you are on track to graduate on time, even if deferred. Than again, if that is true, and you are deferred, without extending your graduation date, have you asked how this will impact you for the FAA FC1 flight physical at WPAFB?
~ AS300s go up for rated, and if selected they will go to WPAFB over the summer. They also start their TS clearance at this time. You will have to juggle over the summee SFT, Flight physical at WPAFB, and your TS clearance. Plus, somewhere along the line that TBAS will be taken, and for PCSM flight hours matter.
~~ If you go to SFT your junior year, you will need to meet the fall rated board. What if the majority of pilot slots are given out for the traditional 300 cadet. Will you have regret?
~~~ Be prepared for this medical issue to come up again. The rated medical exam is 3 days. EKGS are given. The final exam is with a flight surgeon.
~~~~ Just saying get on top of this now. DS was asked to hand carry all of his medical records for this exam.

The other thing is I have always been under the assumption is to contract you must pass the DoDMERB. It is 1 of the 3 caveats....grades, PFT and DoDMERB.
~ Maybe I am reading your post incorrectly. Have you already taken the DoDMERB? If so, than I have always been under the impression that if your medical condition changes after the exam you need to report it. Thus, if you took the exam already, and had an MRI you need to report it now, right? You can't wait because your medical condition changed enough that an MRI was required along with a 2nd opinion. Not talking a sprained ankle or torn cartilage.
~ DS was an HSSP, so I don't know how the ICSP program works regarding contracting.
~ I also thought for SFT .... ALL cadets had to submit a current medical exam for their bag drag. DS had to do what I would call a sports physical. 15 minute physical, shots, eyes, ears, nose, weight and acknowledging any current medical issues.

Hence, if I am right, than either way should not this been reported already? Scholarship or SFT.

I wish you the best, and if I seem Debbie Downer, it is because I want you to be prepared from a medical perspective for the hurdles in front of you, be it SFT or rated.

You can do it, but jmpo, only if you are in front of the 8 ball.

I'll start from the top. As far as the AS500 and POC issue I can only give you the information that he told me otherwise I don't know how it works.
As far as juggling the tasks I would be able to handle it and I am taking my TBAS this semester.
As far as the rated board my eyes are out of regulations so I am going for RPA and ABM at the time and won't have any regrets. I want to be an officer first and foremost.
I'm also prepared for this to come up again. There is nothing I can do now and just have to deal with it.
I reported it as soon as my status changed and he put me on the 30 day no PT schedule. When that was up I started PT again and have been able to get by. We only went with the MRI because they were not sure what was wrong at all. It is hard to send a report into DODMERB when you can't tell them anything other than "it hurts."
