For those of you who have no previous military background and these processes are nothing but muddled (like me!) I wanted to let you know that if your DS/DD logs into look for BOLC assignment it's possible that at the bottom of the assignment, in very small print, the first duty assignment may be listed. Knowing full well that this could change is the one thing I have learned, but none the less it's very exciting to know that my next year's vacation MAY be to Ft Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Yes, cold and dark, but it was second on the list for my DS. Maybe cause this base has it's own ice rink, wildlife and snow. Yes, I raised a weird one.

Congratulations! I guess.

Your DS is no weirder than mine. His top two were Qatar and Kuwait. But then again, he's spent the last four years in the frozen North.

What branch?

But a beautiful place. Which reminds me...

It seems this good ole boy from Mississippi heard that ice fishing in Alaska was an experience not to be missed. So he worked his way up to the Fairbanks area and found himself a level expanse of thick, smooth ice. Anticipating great success, he carefully arranged his stool, camp stove, spitting bucket and fishing gear. No sooner had he started up his gas-powered chain saw to cut a hole when he was stunned by a booming voice from above:

'There are no fish there!"

Awed, he shut 'er down and moved his setup to another spot twenty yards away. He pulled the handle and prepared to saw at the surface when again the great voice erupted:

"There are no fish there!"

Gratefully, he flipped the kill switch on his chain-saw and carefully sought a likely spot. Once again, the moment he cranked the chain saw motor, the voice resounded:

"There are no fish there, either!"

The fisherman found his voice and reverently asked:

"Are you the Almighty?"

"No, you ninny! I am the rink manager."

Wish him and gs' DS the best of luck! They are starting the most best part of their lives.
