Hi everyone, yesterday I got the call from the United Merchant Academy!

I have some questions on fitness physical!!!!

I can do 30 push ups

I can do 40 sit ups

I can run 1.5 mi in about 12 min

Is my fitness too bad guys? If my fitness is bad enough that they will kick me quickly I might as well not go at all!

Thank you for your assistance and if anyone has tips to do more push ups or run faster can someone please tell me.

Sincerely,

Adam

Below are the published Navy PRT standards for Males 17-19. You should be able to easily be within standards by the time indoc starts and you should definitely be within standards by the time it is over. I suggest you get to work!

S/U P/U Run
Maximum 109 92 8:15
Outstanding 102 86 9:00
Excellent 90 76 9:45
Good 62 51 11:00
Satisfactory 50 42 12:30

Were you on Hold status? From which state are you?

American citizen resident of Canada...nominated out of North Dakota though (where we own property). I never looked at the portal to see if I was hold or anything (maybe I was) I just got the phone call from the USMMA saying:

The papers are on the way, sign & return. And report date is 30 June 2015

Hi @KPEngineer thank you for your assistance. Are you sure these are the numbers. The numbers on the USMMA website are higher than this. They list the 1.5 mi run min as 11 min for 17-19 yr olds and 12 min for 20+. It also says that the push up min is 51 or 52 and sit ups 60?

PRT minimums for a male under 21 are 51 push-ups 62 sit-ups and 1.5 mile run in under 11 minutes

Max PRT standard for males is 109 sit-ups, 92 push-ups, and 1.5 miles in 9:45.

This per my DS who is a 4C mid and just took the PRT.

You have time to improve and I am sure your stats will be much higher post Indoc. You wouldn't be admitted if they didn't think you could do it.

They should send you a packet 6 weeks out (if you accept) that includes a workout program. It is a good program to get you in shape for the Indoc and the Academy. Exercise is a part of your daily life as a Midshipman and as an officer. Plus, it's never a bad time to start working out. I would personally start working on your running. That will take the longest. You can improve your push-ups and sit-ups count after a few weeks of working out. Another thing you could do is seek out a coach at your school or a personal trainer. Tell him/her the standards you need to meet and they will help formulate a workout plan. Fitness is one of those things that only you can control. It takes a lot of hard work early on, but it becomes easier to maintain your fitness level once your body becomes used to exerting itself.

If you received an appointment to Kings Point, you would have already had to pass the physical screening requirements of the Academy. I seem to recall that involved push-ups, situps, pull-ups, running and a basketball throw. My son applied to the Naval Academy & the Coast Guard Academy and I forget which one but one of them also required a shuttle run. Anyways, if you were able to pass that test to secure an appointment then you should be able to handle the physical requirements of INDOC and the PRT. July in New York can be a little hot and a little muggy which could be a surprise if you're not used to it or you're not expecting it.

If you looking for a reason not to go, not passing the PFA is a good one.
You don't have the stats that you must have to be admitted to the class of 2019 without facing challenges before. Some midshipmen are challenged by the classes, some by the rigors of regimental life, and some by the PFA. You just need to accept the challenge and do what you need to do to pass it. You are not the first midshipman to be challenged by the physical demands of Academy life and you won't be the last.

In my day, I remember having a specific Physical Aptitude test to pass before I ever went to KP. It involved pull ups, a basketball throw while kneeling and a couple of other things. I do remember having to take it a couple of times to pass; the pull ups were the hard part for me. It's not like I was not exercising, either since I was a three season athlete in high school. I also remember having to pass a yearly Physical Aptitude test at KP, too, for the NROTC program. The bulk of that was a two mile run, but the required time was pretty easy. I remember some classmates walking a portion of it. I don't recall my time at KP as being very physically challenging aside from playing rugby. And Plebe Beats, but I don't think that they do those anymore, at least not without the AC. . . . .
