ROTC scholarship presentation... What's appropriate?

I have a question about appropriateness… DS has been awarded the AROTC scholarship and the NROTC scholarship. He has accepted both. DS is leaning towards the NROTC scholarship; however, it is currently placed at his #3 choice school. This will cost us considerably more since he’s also been awarded an additional scholarship at his #1 choice school. Therefore, he has requested a transfer of his NROTC scholarship to that school. We are not certain when he will hear whether that will happen. His Senior Awards Day is coming up soon. His guidance counselor is aware of his scholarships and would like to know who all will be coming to present his awards.

Should he get presented with both? I’ve been given conflicting advice. Some say, “He’s leaning NROTC so only have that scholarship presented to him. ”… but others say, “No, he earned BOTH. He should be presented with both.” I can see both views but I just want to do what is appropriate.

I guess we are in a location where we are not notified with options. We have to reach out and tap someone if the scholarship is to be presented at awards day.

They are both substantial scholarships and it seems that both should be recognized. DS tends to NOT want to be an attention hound and usually opts for no recognition at all. He’s done this in the past and later felt disappointed when his other classmates got recognition while he did not. DH and I agree that an achievement as big as a ROTC scholarship should not be overlooked.

He’s worked hard and achieved both. His AROTC scholarship has been given to him at his #1 school. Therefore, he does have some further considering before he lets that option go. However, right now, he is leaning NROTC. Therefore, I have to ask… Is it appropriate to have BOTH the NROTC and AROTC scholarships presented to him at awards day? (Even though he’s leaning NROTC?)

Furthermore, about the additional scholarship at his #1 school… DS may or may not make use of that (depending on NROTC transfer, which scholarship he ultimately chooses, etc.)… Awards Day (unfortunately) will occur before all this is clear. Should he get presented with that as well?

Instructive and informative advice will be greatly appreciated. Time is limited.

I've never heard of presentations from two services at the same awards event. It's like proposing marriage to two different girls and telling them both to show up at the ceremony in their wedding dresses, neither aware of the other. At least one of them is going to feel like a fool and both are likely to be more than a little annoyed.

It might work in Saudi Arabia, though.
 
I did not know there were presentations. DS won a 3 year AROTC scholarship, do they only present 4yr? Where / when is it normally done?
 
See the thread from last year has some interesting information. Understanding is need to confirm school will allow presentation; then you need to confirm with school, and the branch you choose to accept.
IMHO if you have not yet decided which branch, decorum should dictate you do not choose to be honored in public. Don't do a keep on the edge of their seat Lebron James show "I'm going to Miami!"

Your son has obviously done quite well to receive both scholarships so let me clarify above, " IMHO if you have not yet decided which branch, decorum should dictate you do not choose to be honored in public." unless both Army and Navy are aware of other scholarship and choose to present awards. Good luck.

I wanted to chime in on a different topic related to this post as I just want to make sure there is no misunderstanding by the OP. To my knowledge, the NROTC scholarship, unlike the AROTC scholarship, can only be used towards tuition. (At least I've never found anything else in writing). It sounds like the reason for the NROTC transfer request to #1 choice school is at least partially financial. Depending on what the scholarship offered by the school covers, there may or may not be a financial advantage to transferring the scholarship there. Of course there may be other valid reasons for transferring... I just don't want folks to be unpleasantly surprised.
 
Would it be possible to not have an actual presentation, but rather an announcement at the ceremony by a school official that your son has been offered full tution scholarships from both the Army and the Navy? Adding how proud the school is to have him continue his education and serve in our armed forces (or something like that).
 
My son's school made this decision easy, they did not allow the presentation of any scholarships at the Senior Awards Night. Graduates could opt to have their scholarships listed in the Graduation Program.

The reasoning was that if they allowed say an AROTC Scholarship with a Big Check and a presenter, they would have to allow the $300.00 scholarship presentation from the local Rotary. Awards night would have taken all night.

Both sons were fine with this, by the time school was finished, everyone they cared about knew about it anyway.
 
Here's another question... What to wear to a high school awards presentation? DS is getting awarded his 4 year/Type 7 AFROTC Scholarship. Should he wear his JROTC uniform (that's heavily decorated with ribbons and cords) or a shirt/tie/jacket? Any guidance is appreciated.

I would go with whatever attire is expected of all students.

Great reasoning. We have a seperate assembly just for scholarships. It takes FOREVER. But then again, the Rotary club wants some PR for that $300. :)
 
Thanks for the inputs! We are comfortable with what to do now! EDelahanty, I liked the wedding analogy! That's very much how it felt... Awkward! :confused: We've just been getting so many conficting opinions, it was confusing to know what is typically done at these things in similar circumstances.
 
Best laid plans... Oldest son had started his AROTC application when he was awarded an NROTC scholarship on the first board. He stopped the Army application at that point. Come awards night a LtCol shows up to award him his AROTC scholarship. My son was very confused. He had submitted grades, boards, PRT, and some ECs. Cadet Command completed his application though his counselor. (they did have his permission)
He had committed to the Navy already and the Chief that came to award the NROTC Scholarship was just as confused.

Oh No. How bizarre they would send someone if he had not accepted the AROTC scholarship.
 
Oooh, Wow! Yeh, but I understand the confusion. More than a few people told us that, in more cases than not, the presenters are local recruiters who, whether or not you are going to use the scholarship, love to present the award because it captures the attention of parents/students that didn't even realize this option existed. Therefore, it would be a good opportunity to allow mention of the scholarship (even though not taken). We were told that the recruiters get swarmed afterwards for details so they try to show up. So, if a recruiting need is there, I guess they are more than willing... However, since he didn't even complete his application- I dunno... Anyway! We are just comfortable now with the path we'll pursue! Dancin' 'round land mines....
 
I'm in the same situation BamaMama. Now don't get me wrong, for a bad situation, this is one of the best to be in! I believe I'm going to send some emails and see if the local recruiters who will be presenting would like to come, even if I decide on the other branch. If not, only one is still perfect!
 
I think his situation was driven more by timing. The third board results, acceptance to his number one school, and the awards ceremony were all within a couple weeks.
