Compression Short and CBT

So I have heard a few parents mention buying compression shorts for their sons to bring to CBT this summer. Are these necessary?

My son has not needed them for his sports so this is something new for him (and me). I had to google it to learn what they are and how they are used.
We have not yet gotten the list for what to bring on RDay so I don't know if this item is on the list but with hearing so many comments about them from other parents, I thought I'd ask about them here.

Thanks in advance.

Last year the recommended items list included "sports-type wicking underwear for physical fitness events," "cannot extend beyond mid-thigh and must be black or grey in color," "no visible logos." The list also stated that cotton underwear (ie white briefs) would be issued. Unless your DS is comfortable wearing white briefs, I think the general consensus was to provide something that wasn't visible / didn't show anything when cadets were doing situps, etc. I don't think the issued PT shorts have a liner in them, so they are roomy. ;)

You can find inexpensive ones at Walmart and more expensive ones at sporting goods stores. I don't remember how many my DS took to Beast -- probably 8-12 pairs. I think I sent more in the first boodle package. Laundry can be an issue at Beast, so more is better.

As a current cadet, I've heard rumors of the class of 2019 being issued the new army pt uniforms. The new ones have compression shorts built in so they aren't as "roomy". If the packing list does not specifically say to bring any I would guess it is true. But I definitely recommend them still to be worn with ACUs.

if true, it will interesting to hear the feedback. Not sure if I would like that. Everyone is built different. I like being able to pick my own.

The APFU (Army Physical Fitness Uniform) is the new PT uniform and is already being sold at the West Point PX. I saw it today and I noticed the shorts have a liner of some sort, but you definitely need underwear with them.

It may be sold at the PX but that doesn't mean it is the cadet PT uniform. There are plenty of regular army officers and NCOs stationed in and around West Point that will buy the new uniform.

Cadet specific gear is either issued or sold at the cadet store.

Yes I know, I was just mentioning that they have it already. However, every cadet is still wearing the IPFU currently.

Army PT shorts have a liner. Underwear is not necessary. We all survived without compression shorts for years.

LOL Scout Pilot - we used to run in boots as well and survived (though my knees disagree at my ripe old age!) So for what it's worth - my 2018 Cadet went with extra compression shorts and swears by them for everyday wear. But that is just one opinion! And nothing but respect to ya' Scoutpilot - I have truly appreciated your input in the past on this forum...

From my reading online, I thought that compression shorts were worn over underwear, but from some of the comments here, I'm getting the impression that compression shorts are worn in place of underwear. I guess both are an option?

They look/feel like swim jammers -- form fitting, wicking material. Tighter fit than regular cotton boxer briefs. Not sure they'd want to wear underwear over/under those.

Thanks @ca2midwestmom - would these be acceptable for CBT? Or are they too long? I am wondering if they might show below the shorts that they'll be wearing.

I have never spent this much time comtemplating underwear for any of my boys. LOL

They come in different lengths, and those might be too long (I was just showing an example). I think they come as short as 6" (maybe 8"). Academy Sports carries Under Armour and BCG ( http://www.academy.com/shop/browse/_/N-0?Ntt=compression+shorts&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial) in black and in various lengths. Just two brands that don't have visible logos. Under Armour is more expensive than BCG. I also found a cheaper brand at Walmart. If the suggested packing list includes them, you may have to look around and have him try different brands on for fit/length, then decide. My DS has long legs so he was able to get away with a longer length.

The "no visible logo" referred to is on the bottom of the leg, not the waistband.

Something to remember as you start purchasing supplies, many vendors provide a discount for serving in the Army and it may help offset purchasing a more expensive model of compression shorts. My DS and I were purchasing compression shorts at an out-let mall, looking for discounted Under Armour shorts and showed the clerk the WP packing list to be sure he was getting the correct color and length. I remember thinking, I'm spending $200 for 15 pairs of underwear? The clerk offered the active duty discount of 20% back in 2012. This was his/our very first offer of a discount because of his selection to WP. He/we stumbled into it, but don't be afraid to ask if there is a discount.

Considering what you might have spent on tuition / room & board at a civilian college, all the things needed before Beast (plus deposit) still won't equal that amount.

I personally use Under Armour boxer jocks, as I have done for any and all athletic activities for the past 4 years. They also work great as regular underwear (not as constricting as compression shorts, but still work perfectly for exercise). The gray and black pairs both meet USMA specs. I swear by these underwear. They are well worth the cost, plus if you are a Sports Authority, Dick's, Modell's, etc., card member, they usually send 20% off coupons monthly. I just purchased more today of a bigger size than I have been wearing.
