So I'm trying to get this laptop that has all the specs I'd like but I can't tell if the bios framework is NIST 800-147 compliant. I tried contacting and asking the computer company but none of them know the answer. I tried looking it up online and I cant find anything on any laptop being NIST compliant, so I'm guessing that all laptops are made to be NIST compliant now. Do any of you know or heard about problems when buying a laptop and then having to get another b/c it is not accepted in the academy?

They give you a very specific make and model to purchase. It's in the packet they send to you.

If you buy the computer package from the NEX, it will be delivered to your spacious suite in the barracks....if you buy your own computer you will have to lug it with you during I day...I also think the academy will then take it from you to check to make sure that it is in compliance with their specs and or regs...I also think that if you buy it from the NEX some warranty/repair is included...I don't remember all of the specifics...but as Beyond said....it will make YOUR life 10000 time easier and as Heyriddle said, the logging in book will give you the specifics....purchase it thru the NEX...it is the easiest/safest IMHO.
Congratulations on your appointment and best of luck to you

Definitely buy through the nex. You're already going to be lugging 18 pairs of underwear, 18 pairs of socks, 18 white undershirts, towels, toiletries, (shoes, and a bunch of other things. the #18 may or may not be exaggerated) I can't imagine carrying a computer and printer too. DS was pretty nervous that day. Having the computer there waiting was one less thing to worry about.

I had this exact same issue! I have an Asus laptop which I love, tried calling the Tech/Sales divisions to see whether or not my laptop was NIST 800-147 compliant. Of course, like you, I got nowhere.

Probably just gonna buy the one from the Navy Exchange.

If I remember from Logging in 2018, it's a Dell E-Series. What's the difference between purchasing an E-Series from Amazon/Dell vs. at the academy? Just not having to carry it?

To think all I had to drag in with me was my Underwood typewriter. . . . I can't recall if I even brought it in on the first day. . . not one of the things that sticks in my memory, though lots of other things do. . .

I spoke with a sales rep from Dell, and he told me that all latitude and precision models are nist 800-147 compliant...thing is, I'm a computer geek and I personally hate Dell, so looks like I'm screwed lol

No you are not screwed...buy/build your own computer and bring it if that is what you want to do you are not forced to buy the computer from the NEX. Don't forget your printer, you may have to lug that too. Just know that you will forfeit your computer to the academy so they can check it out and you will not get it back until pretty close to the end of Indoc. Bring a Black pen, paper, envelopes and stamps...that is the main/only way you will be able to communicate with the outside world since you will forfeit your phone as well and then if you and your company are good you may get a 5 min phone call on Sunday. There is also this thing called the newspaper...I know that is a foreign term to you young people, but, that will be your new form of "social media" and if you want to know what is going on in the outside world consider asking or have your family/friends mail it on a daily basis and you will be able to see what is going on in your community/area and see what your favorite sports teams are doing albeit a few days late.

Again congrats and best of luck on your new journey

I don't recall where I've read it, but seems like the academy has an agreement with Dell, and Dell's technician actually service the laptops on campus... So it just makes it easier, and you avoid any inconvenience if something goes wrong with sending it to repair and not having a working machine on hand...

Buy the KP laptop.

1. The service people will fix it on campus if you buy it through them. Can you say "Make a ticket."
2. DOIT is going to take your computer, and re-install windows and other acts of black magic. In the end you'll have a throttled computer that can do less than my iPad. You don't want that happening to some spiffy thing you built.
3. Seriously, DOIT turns your computer into a paper weight. Firefox crashes if I try and open a new tab. I can only watch youtube videos on Firefox but everything else that is flash I have to view in IE, iTunes will force restart my whole computer if I try and buy music, it gets old, the computer I'm typing on in going in the dumpster before I walk out of the gate.
4. If the software doesn't destroy it, taking it to sea will, and you'll be thankful you have the warranty and support. If you computer breaks at sea DOIT will mail you a new one.
5. DOIT changes the rules as they go. Sometimes chrome is okay sometimes it isn't, flash drives maybe, sometimes, who knows? sometimes this...sometimes that. If you show up with your own computer and it isn't perfectly to spec they'll make you buy the school issued one anyway. "But this meets all the requirements on the website!" you say. They won't care, you'll still be buying the dell.

Buy the dell. Don't argue with @beyond on this. I bet you can count on 1 hand the number of people who don't buy the dell package.

I showed up with one bag full of white t-shirts, socks, underwear, blue PT shorts and the clothes on my back.

If its not issued, you don't need it ... and you won't even be able to use it for a long time anyway.

What a disappointment. I hope this isn't true. Does Spotify work?

the computer I'm typing on in going in the dumpster before I walk out of the gate.

Not arguing with anything, but there's no sense in just throwing it out. You could easily wipe the disk and do a fresh install of Windows couldn't you? That should make it good as new.

Laptops are practically consider "consumables" now a days. After 4 years, the guts cant keep up with the software. Its practically cheaper/easier to just buy a new one every few years. Unless of course you are a techie geek ...

No. Firefox. IE. Office. Some utilities that interface with the labs. That is it.

See KPEngineer on this one. Physically mine isn't in great shape and I'm just so frustrated I think a float test would make me feel better.

Can you bring an iPad? Mine has cellular data so I don't care about it not being on their network.

Also, how can the school still use flash based applications it's not 2008!... I hate flash, it's terrible, I just don't understand.
