Army QB gets another shot at the NFL

It is unclear in the article if Steelman is completely let out of his commitment or if he is still committed to the Army for 3 more years if he doesn't make the team. I would be shocked if Steelman made all the cuts to be on an opening game NFL roster.

Good question and agree Ice... I just don't see him him making a roster. I wish him the best. I mean I know Tebow comes with lots of drama (not necessarily by him, just his name) and lots of folks think he is not a great QB, but if he can't even make a roster, can't see Steelman even coming close. Be very interested to see what happens with Navy's long snapper this year and how that is treated.

Here's another interesting long snapper prospect. Hook'Em!

Is it just me, or did anyone else feel less then inspired by the interview in this article.

I have to admit I couldn't stomach the whole thing. I'm aware that editing can make the Ayatollah Khomeini look like a loveable old granddad or Mother Teresa look like Mata Hari. I also am not well versed on the situations of Roger Staubach and David Robinson.

I shut it off after hearing two things: 1) Getting a chance to play in the NFL is the fulfillment of a dream, 2) WP was the only D1 school interested in him.

Contrast that with the athletically ungifted posters on this forum who are just trying to get that tenth pull-up and would take anything from an SA to xROTC at Northern Wyoming Diesel College. Not to mention the Ivy Leaguer graduate who enlists in infantry.

At some point, my DS will admit that applying for and getting an AROTC scholarship was the selfish act of an adolescent male. He was bound and determined to milk it for all its worth and he did/is. His desire to serve was no more directed than believing that everyone needs to do "something". After 3 yrs and 8 mos I was most proud when I heard him say that his "next five years belong to the Army and Dad, that's tough." I had never heard him actually concede to a higher earthly power.

I will not mention any name in the context of this post, but some professional football players left the game in their prime to enlist.

I just hope WP is as embarrassed as Lt. Steelman is, hopefully, when he finally grows up.

Mitch Harris, St Louis Cardinals. USNA graduate served his full 5 years before going into the reserves and pursuing his pro baseball dream.

He makes up his drill time in the winter off season. 29 years old and he was called up last week to the pro's.

Good story to google and read.

I also am not well versed on the situations of Roger Staubach and David Robinson.

Robinson served 2 years active duty after being drafted by San Antonio. He grew too much in college to go to sea so he went into civil engineering. He could have re-entered the NBA draft but chose to fulfill his commitment to San Antonio since they waited on him to serve. He served the rest of his commitment while in the NBA in the reserves and doing PSA's and recruiting.
He has done some amazing charity work with his money.

Staubach served his full 5 yrs. 1 tour of Vietnam and the remainder in the US.

And agree Scout... Think he should serve his entire obligation. Every Mid/Cadet knows this when they sit in class 2/C year. And also was not happy with the quotes I saw, but know editing can make things look totally different so try to take that into account too.

At least it appears that he did his own talking for this article. He usually lets his daddy do the talking for him in the media. So he has grown up a small bit. You know, baby steps.

This guy’s been out for himself since the beginning. We may not like it, but then again, there is no law against that.

I just hate him cause he sucked. I mean let's be real here...you think Keenan Reynolds was dying to be a naval officer? Or a college QB?

Yeah, that too.

I very much like and admire Ben Garland and particularly how he handles himself in the media. He continually sounds grateful for the opportunities that USAFA provided him. And I believe he still collects an AF paycheck as a PAO guy, so he’d better talk up the AF! When Steelman gets quoted in the media, you never hear him say that type of stuff. (Or his dad for that matter.) I am so curious about the details of his ‘release’ from service, but we’ll probably never know the details. I wonder what he’ll do if he doesn’t make an NFL roster. Maybe try out for the US Bobsled team again.

“Regardless of what happens, I’m just more than thankful to get this opportunity,” said Maples,

That is what a classy person says and what you expect to hear from a service academy graduate in that situation. When I hear Maples speak I say, “Classy guy from West Point.” When I hear Ben Garland speak I say, “Classy guy from Air Force.” When I hear Steelman speak, I say things that I cannot type on this forum.

And the Times-Herald Record needs to get with the program. They still have the old Black Knight logo and did not properly refer to Army West Point!

Steelman is now officially a Baltimore Raven. Looks like he got his.

Not a football expert, but doesn't look like Steelman will make the team. Based on local news reports, a plenty of competition for Ravens wide receivers and Steelman's name doesn't get mentioned too many times. I was watching the pre-season game against the Saints, I think Steelman played some during the fourth quarter only.
