*This is my first post, just registered...I've been lurking for a while.*

How do I fit in?
I am a junior in high school, and I'm a guy (for CFA stuff)
I was accepted into the Summer Seminar.

------------------

I'm most worried about the CFA...so far I haven't done a full dry run yet, but my bests are:

Pull-Ups: 8
Sit-Ups: 53
Push-Ups: 40
Mile: 4:52 (not too worried)

Any tips on the basketball throw, shuttle run, pull ups, push ups, and sit ups??

Even better, any good workouts that I can include that aren't insanely time-consuming that I can do after track? (Even better if they include swimming).

Thank you so much, this site has proven to be an excellent source for information.

P.S. If you all want this to become a permanent "Am I Qualified?" Thread, I have no problem being the guinea pig.

Looks like the typical application for current cadets. ;) I'd say my application, on the academic side, was very similar with a slightly higher math SAT score. You should be able to get into the class of 2014. DAMN! That makes me feels old! You will be part of the new RTB class and I will be a fresh LT! WOW!

I agree, spotless record! as I was reading I had a feeling your upper-body needed help (us trackies aren't the bulkiest people in the world haha:thumb:). Your record looks like mine, except my school never gave us student-athlete awards, and it seems like you have plenty of those. Um, try to get leadership positions. I see you have varsity letters but try to get captain of a team or pres/vice/sec/etc of National Honor Society next year ( I would go for secretary or treasurer since everyone goes for president and some don't get it (me lol). I was too greedy haha)

Your SAT scores are phenomenal. ACT is beautiful. Your mile is unbelievable (a lot of runners get in without really improving their upper bodies. with your times I think you'll be looked at for 5 seconds and passed instantly. They seem really want people that can run long distances fast.) I would still work on upper body though. Get the perfect push-up set and do the work out they give you inside ( I got it recently and you see results fast, do that for when you have to take your real CFA and you'll be golden.)

You have the same GPA as me (yours only being higher by .02 points.) You're taking ALL of the right classes:thumb:.

Umm in conclusion: Remember to get leadership positions, those are key things that even congressmen/senators will ask you about. Get perfect push. if you can, if you can't do as many regular, wide, and close pushups as you can, chin-ups, crunches (I see your sit up score is kinda low, mine wasn't perfect, this is my one weakness.), I wouldn't work on increasing muscle mass AFTER track because it's hard to build muscle that way. If you don't run on the weekends, do your heaviest workouts then (or on your days off) and just try to keep it consistent during the rest of the week.
The basketball throw is a tricky one...practice, if you need more help ask me ( I got an 89 for that at practice, unfortunately only 83 for the real test lol).

Good luck with the rest of your process.

Oh-ps: I haven't been given an appointment yet: you can see how competitive it is, so strive to be the better!:thumb:

"I'm a guy (for CFA stuff)" Cause you aren't otherwise? lol, sorry. I had to comment.

As for your resume, your academics almost match my own and I believe that was my strongest category that attributed to my Letter of Assurance. As for your CFA, well, my scores were similar to those as well, but that's not too great for you since I'm a girl.

It's been said on other threads, but the best way to improve for the CFA is to practice it several times. You are a very strong runner, so you probably focus on your lower body more than your upper during the cross country and track seasons. Make sure you're doing pull ups and pushups every day. You just need to build up your arm strength. As for sit ups, as soon as you feel your shoulderblades hit the mat, tense your abs to touch your elbows to your legs as fast as you can and repeat. This is a test that relies on fast muscle movement more than endurance, although that's important, too.

Have fun at summer seminar.

The XC and long distance background is a real advantage - my experience if you can do that you can do most anything. I believed it also helped our cadet quite a bit during WOG selections last year.

Try to have your application and CFA completed by September for a possible LOA and early appointment.

Just a thought, I would go for a leadership position for any clubs that you are in next year. You seem to be lacking in that category. Amazing stats besides that though.

BTW your school must be huge. I thought my class was big at 350.

haha what I meant was for the scoring categories/benchmarks

Thank you all of you...

USAFA2013: I'll check out the perfect pushup, it's good to hear an endorsement.

I forgot to mention the leadership positions:

Part-time job/summer job as a lifeguard
Vice-president on the City of Laguna Niguel's youth committee
Tutor (self employed)

And thank you especially for the advice regarding the CFA...i feel better about choosing XC/Track over Polo/Swim now

lol, my class was 651, and we were the smallest school in my district. Ranged up to 1,000 in a class at the newest school! :)

you have about 43.3426344135236% chance of getting in.

Hope this helps.

mateus, you're wrong.

it's a 43.12151215121512151215 % chance of getting in. geez.

Your resume looks amazing compared to mine. The way I worked on my CFA was through practice. For the basketball throw, it really is just practice and finding the right technique. Pullups is all practice and a lot of reps as well. Pushups are practice, situps are practice, and shuttle run.. just stay low and do it inside the gym. I made the mistake of doing it on the track and I kept slipping around. The theme of the story is: Practice makes perfect.

I'll come say hi to ya in 15 HNeedle, and teach you some math.

Even with the part time life guard position, I think you really need to show some "take charge" experience. As a tutor, clock and prove your hours. Show that some of your students really did improve and that you were not just putting in time. That's what's lacking here: leadership experience and job skills. You have time but don't neglect it.
