Army ROTC in college scholarship

Hi everyone, recently I talked with a an ROTC recruiter who said that ROTC 3 and 2 scholarships while already enrolled in a university are awarded not based mainly on your college performance thus far but instead based on all the high school ROTC scholarship criteria; High school GPA, ACT and ect . My confusion is if my stats were not good enough when applying in high school for the scholarship selection, then what would be the point in reapplying in my first or second year in college since chances are they would reject me on my same stats? Thank you for all replies ahead of time

The original competition is national, after you enroll in AROTC (assuming) you'll be competing with only those in your battalion who are in the same "boat." You will never know if you don't try... This does not apply for the college programmer NROTC, that is a national competition.

He is probably talking about the National Scholarship (the 3 year one), which you can still apply in during college, but will be competing against HS students. In-house scholarships are based on your performance at the university (although your HS stuff is probably factored into things)... at least that's my understanding of things.

Regardless of the criteria they use there are obviously winners of 2 and 3 year scholarships. That's the point.

Ok, I just re-read the original post. So I still say you'll be competing against other cadets who didn't get the national. Early in the semester they'll have nothing to rank you by but your high school stats, but if you crank a great pt score and have a solid first semester grade -wise you may have a shot. Nothing ventured....

... I hate to be the bearer of bad news (I'm not sure if this has been discussed prior) ... but at least for for our Battalion, we were told that there is no more money allotted towards on-campus scholarships any longer; the only way to obtain a scholarship now, is via the High School Scholarship Program. Please note: I don't not know how far this influence extends (ie: whether it's a BDE by BDE basis, or the entirety of USACC). We have a recruiting team of cadets up here, whose focus (up until a few months ago) was to recruit college students. Our goals have now be realigned elsewhere.

I don't mean to freak any of you guys out, but just understand that if you hedge your bets only on getting a scholarship via on-campus, you may be sorely disappointed. So my point is, apply to the High School program; you have a 100% of not getting a scholarship only if you don't apply. Who knows, you may be surprised with a 4 year scholarship.

Would this apply for contracting junior year too? Or is your eligibility to contract when not on a scholarship based soley on college performance up to junior year? the reason I'm asking all this is because I was not a good high school student academically but was accepted to The Citadel and was wondering if my chances for getting a scholarship or even comissioning is ruined as a result my poor high school performance

I'm going to guess that this is a Battalion by Battalion issue. A move like this Cadet Command wide, would be big news among the Battalions.

That sure doesn't mean that those that did not receive a scholarship from the National Board shouldn't contact the ROO at any school they are considering attending. Even more so if you are making your choice based on the opportunity of getting a Battalion Scholarship.

Ok - was hoping so. Would be a big loss for CC if it was nation-wide.

I even suspect that in your Battalion it might be a "this fiscal year" deal, but you would know better than I.

Haha. Not a clue. I don't make that much to be told those kind of secrets :(

But anyhow, who's to say that this wont change again in the fall. To anyone reading - don't fret over it. At the end of the day, it's out of your control. Nothing you can do about it, except plug forward.
