I am a junior.

I have an unweighted 4.0 GPA and a weighted 4.022. Ranked 3 out of 124.

ACT: 34 composite; 34 English, 33 Reading, 31 Math, 36 Science.

2 AP classes this year and 4 more next year (all APs offered at my school). A average in the two so far.

I am a 2 year Varsity Wrestling Captain (will be 3), Varsity Football Player (probably capt. senior year as I start both ways), Varsity Quiz Bowl (capt. next year),

District Honors Band, Div 1 rating at State Solo and Ensemble, Div 1 rating at State Band Evaluations for 3 years (these band things may be exclusive to the state of Michigan, but Div 1 is highest possible rating),

Founded a business club at my high school and am the president.

Physically fit, 6'3'' 185 lbs with 235 bench press, 315 parallel squat, 360 straight bar dead lift, 6:21 mile time.

Don't really know what else to put. I want to get a BBA, but I know AFROTC wants tech majors. How bad will my major hurt everything else? Also, the school I am shooting for is University of Michigan, which is in-state for me so I guess I'm looking for a Type 7 scholarship.

Another thing--if I do get into the ROTC--to qualify for the POC, it says you need to be selected by a board of officers. What percentage of people in AFROTC are selected for POC, and if you aren't selected, are you just done with ROTC?

You are competitive but there is no definite answer. Nobody can predict this. You must remember there's still the interview. If you do not get selected for SFT you are disenrolled. 80% of scholarships go to STEM majors and more get selected for SFT as a tech. You have a better shot at rated as non-tech I believe.

You do look strong, but the fact is nobody knows your chances because it will come down to the candidate pool. It does matter if you want tech or non tech. 80-85% of all scholarships go to STEM majors.

As far SFT selection rate varies year by year. Last year it was less than 60% overall. the non-tech/non rated was 17%. Tech rated was 63%. This years final selection rate was @90%. Nobody knows what the rate will be when you go up for it.
~ Rated means flying. There are 4 rated paths. Pilot, CSO (navigator) RPA and Air Battle Manager (ABM)

Also two things to remember.
1. ACT and SATs are not super scored. It is best sitting.
2. Your senior year academics/ECs are not included in the selection process. They only look at your profile through your junior year.

If you are applying to USAFA too, they will super score and they do include your senior year.

Good luck

That ACT is for one sitting, not superscored. So would you recommend applying as early as possible once June 1st hits? My PFA is at 94. Should I try to improve over the summer or just submit my application as soon as I get it ready after June 1st? Would that increase my chances for being selected as a nontech major for a Type 7, or does it not matter when you submit?

You want to submit the best package. I would work out and max that PFA. The 1st board will not meet until Dec. I would try to get the package done by July because you still need the interview to be complete.

You can add new SAT/ACT scores if they increase in the fall.

OK great, thank you!

I've been able to see this program for the past 4 years and can tell you that although you are a very competitive candidate, no one can give you a definite answer on whether or not you'll be selected for a scholarship or SFT. (Summer Field Training - Allows you to becoming a POC if you complete it)

2013 SFT Selection rate was ~92%
2014 SFT Selection rate was ~65%
2015 SFT Selection rate was higher than expected ~85% (Could be higher, have not seen the official numbers)

If you do not get selected for SFT you don't automatically get dis-enrolled from the program as it is up to the commanders discretion. We've had three cadets over the past 5 years not get selected their first year eligible for SFT who have gotten selected their second eligible year. (They've had to repeat AS200)

As for your scholarship question - Again no one can really tell you if you'll get one or not, but from my personal opinion your scores look very good. I had the opportunity to speak with Colonel Wydra last summer and with the past budget cuts he stated that it is allowing AFROTC to give out more scholarships in the future.

Rated: Going for Pilot, CSO, ABM, CRO, RPA
Non-Rated: All other career fields (Missiles, Cyber Ops, Intel etc)

Right now Rated does seem like it does give you better chances of getting selected for SFT, but there were alot of non rated cadets that were selected too.

Hope this helps a bit

NotHave!

I have noticed you are asking others that have received a scholarship to share their stats. I get why. Truly I do, but I beg and implore you not to do this anymore.

1. Broken record....last year was last year. Nobody here can know what your competition pool looks like for your year group. Anyone in the know will not acknowledge it because it is against policy for HQ AFROTC.

2. You want non-tech. You should not compare a tech stat to yours, even if if you don't heed my 1st point since you want non-tech. 80% of all AFROTC scholarships go Tech aka STEM. Keep apples with apples, oranges with oranges. If you read someone had a 27 ACT and is going Tech, don't assume anything since you are going non-tech.

3. There are over 2000 HSs in this nation. Part of the process is they (AFROTC) require a school profile. I am not trying to be rude, but 95% of candidates will say they attend a competitive HS in their county or state. AFROTC scholarships are national. The best HS in Arkansas may not be at the same level as the best HS in CA, NJ or VA. It could be the avg HS in TX is deemed by Maxwell to be equal to best in SD.
~ Broken record...please look at my other posts regarding the impact of the school profile and gpa.

4. SFT. Our DSs class was 55%. Class of 14 (SFT 12) also had a 90%+ rate. HOWEVER, the class of 13 and 14 also faced what the AF calls a RIF (Reduction In Forces). They allowed cadets to separate, even scholarship with no payback. If not enough left voluntarily they (ADAF) were going to send them to a selection board and force them to leave.

The numbers attending really have not changed for SFT the past few years (2000-2300). It stands close to 2K per year group. What has differed was the pool size. That is where your concern should lie. If the pool size is 2900 applicants and they want 1900, than the % selected will be different if the pool size is 2100 and they want 1900.
~ Remember statistically the minority of cadets are on scholarship.

Finally, keep this in mind. The HSSP AFROTC selection rate is equivalent to an SA appointment rate. @16-18%.
~ 95%+ SA candidates will apply for ROTC scholarships. The reverse is not true for ROTC scholarship candidates applying to SAs. You need to look at the SA forums too because they will be your competition.
~~ Just like the NROTC, AROTC recipient, the SA candidate that is awarded a scholarship can hold it, no harm no foul until July or later. The ROTC board must assume they will activate it come fall when they accept it.
~~~ Right or wrong, that is reality. IE you apply for AFROTC and USAFA. You are awarded Type 1 from the Dec. board....no appointment yet. You accept, and know if Yale accepts you, you will go AFROTC over USAFA. USAFA appoints you Mar. 15th, last AFROTC board has met. Yale has yet to answer. Do you now throw that AFROTC scholarship back in the pool? Do you accept the appointment as now your plan B if Yale says no? If Yale says yes, do you keep them on the hook by paying deposits knowing you will go to I Day, but just in case.
That is what happens every year.
Move forward. Don't read into anything.
