Hi,

I'm a college freshman and this is my second time applying to USNA. I had sort of had a poor first semester as far as grades go (2.35 gpa, Mechanical Engineering major), but I'm also on the varsity swim team (Division 3) that lasts from September 15th - February 14th. I go to a private college in the NE. I got a:

C- for Chemistry for Engineers w/ lab
B+ for Civiliation (mandatory humanities class)
B- in Calc 1
A- in Fitness and Wellness (mandatory gym class)
C- in General Physics for Engineers w/ lab.

16 credits total

I'm taking 17 credits this spring semester and I plan on doing much better, especially since swimming will be ending and I will be used to the daily routine here. My question is: Would I have a chance at being appointed to NAPS? I know it's usually for enlisted, recruited athletes, possibly minorities and those who need some academic help, but would USNA appoint a college freshman there? Or would it just be expected that I reapply next cycle if I'm declined for c/o 2019?
Wondering if someone has insight to this situation, thanks.

I think there would be some hesitation, after looking at those grades. NAPS should help students transfer over into the "college mindset" from the fleet or high school. You're already at college, so the only thing NAPS could do would be give you a taste of getting yelled at while you're trying to go the college thing. A college GPA of 2.35 is going to set off some red flags.

Any candidate needing NAPS after 2 years of college is in pretty bad shape. You, right now, are in your own personal NAPS and are making your academic case for the Admissions Board. You have 2 remaining semesters and summer school to generate some stunning grades before the Admissions Board looks at you. Think you can do it?

got into naps after a year of college with a 3.1 gpa with similar courses. they look at the fall semester grades so if you do plan on doing better next semester, should probably plan on doing better next fall too if you don't get it this year since they'll look at all 3 semesters

Hey, quick question, I'm in a similar situation to the OP, I did not receive an appointment my senior year of high school. I was contacted by the coach at the academy for Track and Field but waited too long to make my decision and ended up missing the boat for a nomination that year (my high school grades were pretty poor around a 2.7, and i don't think i would've gotten in regardless). Anyway, I'm about to finish my first year at a local CC (taking credited, college level classes in math, chem, English etc) and will more than likely end up with around a 3.5 gpa. My question to you is, did you have anything that set you apart that allowed you to get into NAPS with a 3.1 gpa Or is that a competitive average to be considered for an offer. I'm not degrading your performance at all as it was in college level courses, but most of the people I've spoken with about prep school admissions have given me a pretty bleak outlook on my chances, they all make it sound like you must be a football player or Prior enlisted to get in, and I don't have much hope for getting a direct admission, so prep is basically my only chance. Any info would be appreciated.

There was a NAPSter who did a year at Miami. I don't know what his grades were like, but it's a possibility.

Honestly, the answers to what are my chances questions are complete shots in the dark. I wasn't a recruited athlete or prior enlisted, I applied and made it clear in my essay that I was willing to accept NAPS if offered and they did. So whoever you've been talking to (unless it's admissions), they don't make the decisions on who's getting in and who's not. Apply, market yourself as to why you deserve a shot, and admissions will make the call.
