My parents would like to know what they can do at West Point (i.e. what will they do in the parent's briefing) when they drop me off. Anyone have any experience/insights about this? Thanks!

My DD's dad dropped her off for SLE so I don't know what the briefing entails, but the Visitor Center and Museum just 1/4 mile from the front gate is a great place to visit. They can also book a tour there that will give them some history and beautiful sites. They could easily spend 1/2 a day taking the tour and perusing the museum/Visitor Center.

As already mentioned, the museums and bus tour, there's not much. They can't wander aimlessly on Post. If they do want to help you, SAF site is a great way to learn about the methods and language to gain a nom and appointment.
Now going to NYC, is a different story. You can have a great time there!!

Very easy to ride train into NYC each day once they exhaust the historical stuff around the WP area

I'm from NYC lol. I guess they'll just take the tour or something... Thanks a lot!

DD did not go to SLE, but if it is like the regular admissions briefings, your parent(s) will be able to sit in on a briefing and go on a tour led by a cadet. I would also recommend the bus ride/tour from the visitor's center. They do a nice job. Also, stop by the Thayer and have a cocktail on the deck overlooking the Hudson. It was not open in the winter when we were there for DDs overnight, but I will bet its a relaxing place in summer.
