I am Looking for an appointment to the USMMA. I have just completed my freshman year of high school and I was wonder how competitive I am.

I am at a competitive prep school. Where admission is required to attend.

I currently have a cumulative 3.67 GPA.

I am the founder and have been captain since freshman year of the Varsity Sailing Team at my school

I am also active in many clubs at my school.

I have yet to take the SAT and ACT.

About how competitive am I and is my GPA high enough.

Thank You

The gpa at your school is not the final one that the school will be looking at. Because some schools weigh and some don't, USMMA will look at the courses and the grades in them and weigh them and look at that gpa

Nobody can tell you how competitive you are or not - you are only a freshman you have many more classes to take and there is a possibility that you will do great in some/most and a little less than great in others. When you become a Jr. you will then look at your GPA and test scores and they will have to stack up against that incoming class...not the class of 2018, 2019...and it depends on what state you are from...way too many variables to say yes or no.

By the way, Kinnem is correct...he provided you with a link to start...look there and dig a little on your own...you will have to dig deep personally, mentally and physically to finish Indoc and your plebe year...

Keep up your studies, do your best and then reach a little higher, keep your nose clean (don't get in big trouble) and then you have to finish all of the application process requirements. Best of luck

I'd say if you keep up your GPA and get a 1300 (CR+M) or 30 ACT, bonus if your math is 700+ or something like 32 ACT, you're pretty much in. As long as you have some resume items and pass your CFA.

It's early in your search, but not a bad thing. Follow the advice of those who have answered and MAKE SURE you get involved in extra curricular activities OUTSIDE of school. Volunteer work, internships, etc. KP looks for the busiest candidates with great academics, not just great academics. Know this, many of the challenges you will encounter at KP do not have a simple answer just when you ask someone. There is much figuring it out on your own. I would do as much research as you can about the school, including visiting. There is no known "formula" that makes anyone a perfect candidate. Stay busy, and good luck

So does the merchant marine academy pay more attention to SAT and ACT scores than GPA or a combination.
It's not that they more attention to the SATs, it's that without hitting the minimums, the rest of your file won't even get reviewed.

It's not that they more attention to the SATs, it's that without hitting the minimums, the rest of your file won't even get reviewed.

And that's definitely for a very good reason: he minimums are very low. I think I beat the minimum for math by over 200 points. Someone who can't make those doesn't really have any business being at a service academy I don't think.

But, if you take away something here @kcullen70, it should be that getting accepted to Kings Point is a challenge, but very much doable in the end. It isn't rocket science either. If you hit these few items your admission is probably all but guaranteed:

1) Pass the CFA
2) Pass the DoDMERB Screening
3) 1250-1350 SAT CR+M, preference for M > 700. (If you're starting from a lower score achieving these numbers may be tough, be proactive)
4) Around a 3.7 HS GPA in the top 10-15% of your class
5) Some resume items, volunteering, etc. Doesn't have to be too substantial.
6) Secure a congressional nomination

One last note, make sure you articulate interest in the Maritime Industry in your personal essay (kept to 200 words).

I think that if you hit these 6 points, maybe unless you live in a state where there's a lot of demand e.g. NY or CA, then you're in for sure.

Good luck.

kcullen70: If I read your posts right you are finishing freshman year so the things for you to do right now (through sophomore and into junior year) to best help your chances in getting into any SA are to make sure you take a full pre-college set of course and if possible ensure you have solid Math, Science, and English curricula lined up, also a Foreign Language too - i.e a rounded curricula with as much AP course-load as you can handle without adversely impacting your GPA.

As indicated there's really no one thing that generally makes an individual prospective candidate - all the SA's including USMMA evaluate the total person, as note do some research - a lot of information about how the USMMA evaluates candidates, etc. is available online the laws and regulations in the CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations) include and are the root of the process. After that data like the link above help, and yes as you'll see standardized test scores are an important component in where your completed application will rank but it isn't the only thing, nor is class rank or GPA....

Good luck and keep your head out of the boat so you don't miss any windshifts over the next three years, USMMA Sailing is on the rise again!
