I think this bodes well for incoming cadets and those who choose the OTS route.

The Air Force admitted 520 candidates to attend OTS at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama in 2015. But next year, OTS is expected to admit more than 1,100 candidates. That's pretty funny that they would say that. Given that 90% of AFROTC cadets were selected for FT this summer.

That's probably a reference to the size of the ROTC pipeline as opposed to the SFT selection rate.... ie don't expect any more scholarships than what's awarded at present.

Well the SFT selections for an EA aren't based on whether they have a scholarship or not, so whether they give more scholarships out or not wouldn't technically lower the number bc there are always a lot of people that do the program without a scholarship; although I see your point. More scholarships available means more people are willing to do it than if the money wasn't there.

Both EAs AND scholarships increased this year though.

Well, that was this year. The statement was referring to the future.

It actually makes sense the way they are doing it. What you are looking at is not the class of 17 or 18, but the year group that they cut their SFT numbers. 15 and 16. As stated they have no intention of increasing ROTC or USAFA, which means to me that you probably will not see any increase in scholarships. OTS is much cheaper for them and gives them better control over the amount in the pipeline than other commissioning options.

This is not uncommon for the AF for many reasons. The AF tries to do survival cuts, but what typically happens is they cannot foresee the future military needs, nor can they truly predict the number that voluntarily separated. IE, they open up VSP for certain enlisted members and agree to let them go, but than after they close it maybe more decide to leave than they had predicted, which means they bring them back. As stated they are not expecting to do Stop/Loss so it really is not a big deal.

The increase of 500 more officers is big because at 1000 annually that would make USAFA as the smallest commissioning source. ROTC will be 50% of all of the commissioned officers.

OBTW, I have always said the AF is bulimic. I am not making light of the disease, so please no flaming. It is just that the AF will binge, then purge. repeat.

They have done this for decades. It also usually goes in a 20 year cycle. 1974, 1993, 2013/14 were binge years. 18 months later they say OH SHEAATTT we cut too hard, time to binge.

It is my understanding as it stands now the SA's are currently the smallest commissioning source for their perspective branches correct?

according to that article they will be the smallest.

@2000 will commission AFROTC, and if OTS goes to 1000 they will be number 2. USAFA is below 1000, hence, the smallest group for FY15. I believe USAFA is below 900 for FY15.

Now what needs to be understood is career field. OTS may be tilted higher for non rated than USAFA or AFROTC.
