Hey guys, I just wanted to know if I am totally out of the competition if I didn't have such a great freshman year, a much better sophomore year and an excellent sophomore year. Again my biggest concern is that I didn't do so great in my freshman year but I really kicked it into gear during my sophomore year. How will this affect me? I am in high school.

I know that I didn't have the best Junior year, and it was certainly a departure from any other year of high-school I had. However, I suppose I had a well rounded enough background and filled my schedule with AP classes, and I was accepted this year for the Class of 2019.

Relax and let things work themselves out. I had a bad freshman year and kicked it into gear my sophomore year as well. Don't make any more B's and take hard classes. If you are getting a B study more.

Any college wants to see progress during high school
a lot of schools will have a positive view about you even if you have really bad grades during freshman year but pull it up consistently through high school

Honestly, how can we really tell? Did you manage a D- in each course your frosh year? Did you kick it into all Cs by end of soph year?

If you want to know if a general upward trend in gpa is encouraged, sure! (Better a steady stream of all As, but you knew that)

Do your absolute best taking the most difficult coursework offered to you. Do well in sports. Do well in a job.

Thank you all so much for the replies! My freshman year I had a steady stream of As and Bs and unfortunately Cs in my honors math classes only. I took 4 honors my freshman year but math was the only class I got Cs in. Sophomore roles around and now I have a steady stream of As and Bs in 4 honors and 2 AP classes. This is the trend I was talking about. How does WP interpret that? My junior year I am taking 3 honors and 3 AP classes and I am going to work for all As

OP, are you an active participant in a sport? Do you have a job? what leadership skills have you acquired or can you acquire? You know, it's the WHOLE PERSON, not just grades.

If you are 18 and have had a job with promotions, with responsibility, all while keeping up stellar grades, excelling in your sport, and volunteering at the local animal shelter, sure!

Everything and anything counts. Just choose what you love and dedicate yourself to it.

For example (and I can use only my own kids): homeschool, college (10-16 credits/semester) at 16 while full-time high schoolers, fencing 4 nights a week + Saturday + monthly tournaments and traveling, newspaper carriers EVERY morning from 5:30-7, one washed dishes on weekend nights at local eatery, one fixed & sold guitars and gave lessons at the local music shop. They were volunteers at our church, and did all kinds of service stuff in our neighborhood.

If you can do all that, plus get 700+ on your CR & M SAT, plus maintain a 3.8 gpa, plus do very well in your sport - hey, hardly any worries. ;)

My son only had a 3.4 GPA, 29 Super Score, he is a white male played HS Football but not great, So he was not recruited for Sport or equal opportunity Appointment. He just has that military bearing. I traveled with him to several of his ROTC interviews and of course met his Academy Blue and gold officer and West Point. You could tell from the responses, that they really were impressed after their interviews. Received Appointments to West Point, Navy and VMI. He went Navy where he is thriving.

Other Son Was 4.0 GPA Same 29 Super score, Passed over by all Academies. Ouch.

Did all the same stuff for both sons, It really sometimes is that intangible.

Saw somewhere else on this board, a Young Man that has 4.4 GPA, Mid toupper 30s on Superscore, 4Varsity sports, several class leadership positions, and is only on the Waiting list.

We are working with another young man right now, and he only has a 24 Super Score but he was invited to Summer Session at Air force, He has an incredible story , I believe I heard someone in this blog refer to it as a "Hook".

I repeat myself, there is an intangible, that all the numbers can't predict.
