March-how important?

With regard to the numerous comments posted about the soon arrival of March, does anyone know that mail does indeed start coming soon--even though they tell you April 15th? Is there precedent for appointments/rejections starting to arrive in the mail as early as beginning of March? Is it that spread out, as opposed to sending them all out basically at once--the way many schools do?
Has the admissions office noted how many applicants they had this year to consider for regular acceptance (i.e. not EA)? And that would be for less than 200 places left??

Yes they start arriving in March. My son got his four years ago on March 29th. Also I noted from another site that the CCEB has met and some appointments should be coming out shortly. Good luck to all.

Another site?

What is this other site of which you speak? Another way for me to pass the excruciating waiting game perhaps??? :shake:

I am hoping sooner then later..................

We are visiting USMMA on 3/25. She won't make her decision on their offer of Prep school until then. She was at AIM last year so she has been to CGA, but she needs to go to USMMA before she decides.

And of course we are still hoping to get a CGA Scholars offer from CGA.

The below is from 12/18/08 Regarding Early Admissions:

Well, now that the final EA notification letter has left the Academy...

Applications Reviewed: 772
Appointments Offered: 235 (127 Full; 108 Conditional)
Appointments Accepted: 6 (As of 12/17/08)

Of the 235 appointees...

Average SAT Scores: 640 CR 660 M (includes converted ACT scores)
Average HS Rank: 7% (includes reported and calculated HSR's)
Average GPA: 3.88 (all reported GPA's are converted to a 4.00 scale)
Average PFE Score: 210

36 U.S. states are represented plus several appointees living abroad.

From two weeks ago:
Both the CCEB and CGAS Board are meeting now with appointment recommendations being made (respectively) for the Class of 2013 and CGAS Program. The first batch of CGAS appointment letters could be in the mail as early as next week.

thanks for all the helpful info! I am learning a lot about this process...
I know "points" are given for SAT scores, EC's etc. How much is is the physical fitness score weighted compared to SAT's? I believe my son's SAT falls slightly below the average, but way above average in PF--but are they unequally weighted by CCEB? And then there is the all-important "moral character," but does that only come into play when all else is equal? I hope CG is really desiring that, but I imagine it's hard to assign "points" to something so subjective on paper.

The CGA has always said they use a HOLISTIC approach to admissions, so they look at the "Entire Package" to make their decision.

That's what we all hope for! :thumb:

Welcome to the mail carrier stalker club for Spring 2009

Yes, welcome to PSA. Our mission is to quickly run (or in my case power walk) to the mail box each day, while silently praying for the big envelope of joy from the CGA. Our secondary mission is to drive everyone around us crazy with our whining and moaning about how slow the mail is, and how tired we are of waiting.

In the past, the "math" portion of the SAT and the class rank was weighted twice as much as the verbal portion of the SAT. The PFE test score is used as an indication of how the incoming cadet will handle the rigors of swab summer. A score of 165 is necessary to pass, a score of 200 is required after admission.

I would say that high math SATs are given more weight.

To educate, train and develop "leaders of character" is the mission of the USCGA.

What distinguishes those who are accepted?

  • Proven academic accomplishment, particularly in math and the sciences
  • Skill as an athlete
  • A record of service to the community
  • Motivation to embrace leadership development
  • An unwavering desire to serve their country and humanity

Many thanks for great feedback for those like me navigating the USCGA "waters"for the first time. Based on much of what I have read in the various threads, we best hunker down for about another month before appointments are more likely to start showing up in mailboxes. (so probably best not to be stalking the mailman yet)...does anyone have some experience with appointments that would offer some specific kinds of things that have the capability of balancing out average SAT math scores (ex. Eagle scout? or is that pretty much the norm for the male population that is applying? Great reference letters?)...just trying to prepare myself for the probabilities...

My son is an Eagle, had average SAT scores last year, played 2 varsity sports (polo 2 years, swim for 3), great letters of rec, 3.5 gpa. He was waitlisted last year but no appointment. This year he improved SAT score by 100 points, took rigorous college courses and did well, improved an already high PFE, continued to volunteer with scouts and got more recommendations. So, we'll see if he hit the right formula this go 'round. You just never know what will strike the reviewers, I guess. Good luck.

My DD has received a med. waiver now from the CGA....:smile::biggrin::smile::biggrin::smile::biggrin:
dated 2/23/09 (did I post that already, as I do not remember?)

This is very helpful...now I will be interested to see how he fairs this year, given a similar scenario perhaps...Did he enroll in a university as a regular freshman?

He is taking the transfer curriculum at a local community college. His first semester schedule included Calc, Physics, and Phys Lab, English, and another humanities class...can't remember right off the bat. He decided he wanted to try crew and chose this particular school because it is known for its crew program, which rows against the big schools out here in CA. (that and the high likelihood of transfer to good schools afterwards...good meaning academically AND a good crew program). So, he is preparing for the worst (not getting in to CGA) but hoping for the best. If he doesn't make it in, we know he will find another school that fits. Life throws you curve balls, and this one took the wind out of us all at first. Now we are seeing that a lot of good came of it. The end result that we'd all like to see, of course, is that appointment to the academy. Fingers crossed for you to hear good news the first time!

does this mean u have an appointment?

not that we know of.. but she did receive a medical waiver from CGA, so I guess that is a start.

SHE did however receive a Prep School Appt from USMMA.

Which is why (IMHO) he's gonna see a different result this year! :thumb:

I nominate Luigi

...for membership on the CCEB!

Thanks for the encouragement! We are taking one day at a time and enjoying our family being wholly intact for possibly the last extended period of time. Exciting times and a bit heart wrenching too!

Wow! Sounds wonderful...It is hard for me to imagine what else the CGA would be looking for...and what a great thing to have a community college that has a crew team--I am quite sure my son won't have that opportunity if he ends up having to go the same route over the next year...I wish you all the best!!

Thanks Mom2

We think he's a pretty good fit too. In my heart I know he will land where he is supposed to, and if CGA is the place then it will happen. There are sooo many great candidates out there, though, so we still worry that maybe he hasn't done quite enough. But, yippee!!, it's almost March and last year a whole truckload of appointments came out during this time frame.

Hang on...it's gonna be a great ride! :thumb:
