What programming language is used in the CS classes? Thanks.

Core class uses Raptor and Matlab. The major uses pretty much everything, but mainly Java and C++.

Which one would you recommend learning? I'm in a class doing HTML work, but the teacher said he could start teaching me some other stuff if I wanted because I am so far ahead.

HTML is basically worthless. I'm fluent XHTML/CSS, but not anything else, so I'm planning on getting familiar with a real language before going to an academy since I want to major in computer engineering.

learn raptor

LOL

lol why would they start you off with C++...

I'm taking beginning programming at OKC community college and we start off with C++, so does Intro to Programming at OU.

I'm pretty sure college of engineering does Matlab at some point but its not in the first year, maybe not in the second, lol. I don't know if we EVER do raptor...but I'm mech E not CS so...

I'm lost here. I may be getting the IB Diploma, but for a projected engineering major, I'm clueless about computers

yeah, I'm not an expert on CS either

...and isn't that horrible for someone who's thinking about double majoring?

I just know what they start you off in at the local schools

lol

well that explains why I have no clue what it is:shake:

so, I have almost zero computer programming experience. how screwed will i be next year?

I'm planning on majoring in computer security, so I've been checking out this Rapor. It doesn't look as hard-core as C++ or other high-level languages and from what I've turned up the program used to program in Raptor (how ironic...) is somewhat what-you-see-is-what-you-get.

Personally, I'd prefer to learn something like C or C++ (I'm a Linux guy and about 90% of the system is in these languages), but I've seen things like this used as "gateway languages" to learn programming concepts. Raptor may be a teaching tool so we can learn programming theory before practice.

Raptor just is a gateway language. I learned Java in high school, made raptor a joke. If you become a comp sci major, you will learn plenty more languages.

yeah, I learned a lot of Visual Basic 6.0 in HS. It made Raptor a joke.

Raptor is a programming language for people who don't do programming. Drag and drop boxes for coding?!:yllol:

Now, MatLab messed with my head a little bit. "What's the syntax for triple integrals?"

VB is a very nice program to learn if you want to start off with something that takes moderate skill, but is easy to understand. I am taking a CHS class on it through U of PITT
