Hi all,

A first-timer here. Both w/ respect to my posting as well as having a child about to gradudate high school. My DD received an envelope from USNA in the mail today. She is a rising senior, applied to NASS but was not accepted. I believe the NASS application is also considered step 1 for the applying to USNA. Am I on the right track to assume that perhaps this is USNA decision as to whether or not she is considered a candidate for consideration?

Many thanks folks.

First and foremost, welcome to the forum! I wish your DD the best of luck in these upcoming months! I would believe you would be correct to assume that the letter is USNA's decision regarding your DD's candidacy.

Sorry if I'm understanding you wrong, but if you're asking if the rejection from NASS is indication for candidacy, being rejected doesn't mean you can't apply to USNA. As many people on this forum have said, there are a lot of mids who never attended NASS. I believe the application is the preliminary applicatuon so it is step 1. If they think you are a good candidate, they will send you an email and mail saying you're an official candidate

Many thanks folks - the insights are very helpful. Have a great day.

The NASS decision shouldn't concern you or your DD. Our DS was rejected for NASS, but received an LOA and Appointment; he is about to complete Plebe Summer. If you look through the forums, you'll find a bunch of kids that were rejected for NASS, but received Appointments.

It could be an official candidate letter or a letter telling her about local admissions forums etc. as others have stated NASS acceptance has no bearing on receiving an appointment and approx 2/3 of each class did not attend NASS.

My daughter actually received two letters from USNA this week. The first told her that she was an official candidate, assigned her a candidate number, and gave her next steps. The second letter, dated and received two days after the first, said that unfortunately she was not a strong enough candidate. It did not have her candidate number on it, but the rest of her personal information was the same. Has this happened to anyone else? Should she just proceed with the application process with her candidate number in hand, or should she call them to confirm that she is actually a copetitive candidate?

There is a difference between meeting the minimum qualifications and being a 'competitive' applicant. USAFA explained this to us with a chart, saying who had the best shot, basically.
The first form letter is simply to say she is in the applicant pool. I'm guessing the second one is a suggestion that she beef up her stats to be more qualified. An admissions counselor should be able to look at her app and give advice to improve her competitive odds. DS continually updated his portal with new info throughout the fall and winter - even after the applications were technically closed.
FWIW, he received appointments to both USNA and USAFA.

Thank you. That makes sense. She will be re-taking the SAT this fall and taking the ACT for the first time. Since they only have one set of scores for her at this time, I'm sure that is what they are referring to.

Take the TESTS early and often. They superstore. You can look at the class of 2019 portrait to get an idea where she needs to be. Last years class was the highest academically, most women and highest physical stats in the history of the USNA. Good luck and best wishes to you and yours.

She should proceed with the application. As a BGO I have had candidates get both letters this year. If you have a candidate number you can complete the app. Have her log into CIS and get started. It seems quite a few candidates got both letters.
