Hello,

I will be attending the University of Florida this fall on a 4-year Army ROTC scholarship. I have been told that I will contract within the first week there. My question is if I would still be able to transfer to the naval academy after I contract in the army. Furthermore, I know that it is possible to use a ROTC nomination, but I was wondering what it means when it says that that the school needs to be a "honor rotc" program?

Thanks for your help.

Not sure about the "Honor ROTC" program.

As far as your other question, yes you would still be able to accept an appointment to the USNA if you are a contracted AROTC cadet without any obligation to the Army. If you do leave to attend the USNA it's not really a transfer since none of your credits will transfer and you will just be starting over in the 4 year Academy program. You may be able to test out of some classes but that's something someone who attends the USNA would have to answer.

Not 100% positive but I believe the honor ROTC might apply to JROTC. I believe if a JROTC unit achieves this a student From that unit can apply for a nom from this source. Hopefully someone verifies that.
Jcleppe is correct. As far as validation of courses check out the USNA website for info on that or some old threads in this forum. Good luck!

"Honor ROTC" definitely only applies to JROTC programs. BTW, you'll only contract during your first week if you pass the PFT. Make sure you're in shape to do so otherwise the money doesn't start flowing.

"Honor ROTC" should be referring to a JROTC "Honor unit with distinction" nomination

Correct, but I believe the JROTC unit only must be an honor unit if you're applying to a different service. I.E if he want to go to USNA from an Army JROTC program, then it must be an honor unit.

I could be wrong, it's been a few years...

If you do go through with you plan to transfer, be prepared to pay back all the money you receive from the Army. If you contract in then break the contract, you must pay back all the money given to you.

This is not correct.

The cadet can contract the start of their freshman year and still drop from the program before the start of their sophomore year without any obligation to repay the scholarship money.

Jcleppe is correct, according to the most recent version of the scholarship contract that I've read.

Noted, it appears than that the different services have different languages on their contracts. In all though to the original post, I would try out AROTC first before you fully commit to USNA.

Don't have the conviction that you won't like the program because you may enjoy it and make bonds during your 1st year

The same is true for all ROTC programs, AROTC, AFROTC, NROTC, and NROTC-Marine Corps Option. They all allow the first year with no obligation even if they are on scholarship and contracted.

I agree with Jcleppe. That is absolutely true, every ROTC scholarship cadet/mid can walk as he stated.

Druiztx,

You are posting a lot on the AF side. It is true for AFROTC 4 yr scholarship you can walk no payment back your 1st year.

AFROTC is unique. It is a 2+2 scholarship. SFT is make or break, and selection is blind regarding scholarship cadets.

The only thing AFROTC has in common with A/NROTC scholarship is the walk away point that 1st year. The rest will be unique to that commissioning source.

-Bull- is correct.
The honor unit question only applies to jrotc (highschool rotc units)

There are 2 awards in jrotc: distinguished unit and distinguished unit with honors.

A jrotc unit earns "points" from events, through out the school year. At the end the highest ranking units (according to the point system) in an area will recieve the "distinguished unit" award. This award gives many benefits, of which one is being able to nominate cadets to service academies that correlate with the branch of jrotc.
AKA njrotc can nominate to naval academy
ajrotc can nominate to west point.

However, a percentage of the units that recieve "distinguished unit" will recieve the "distinguished unit with honors" award. Theses units will be able to cross nominate.
AKA regardless of branch type of the njrotc the military science instructor of the program can nominate a cadet to any of the 4 academies.

Source: my njrotc company has won distinguished unit almost every year since its founding and won the distinguished unit with honors award for the 2014-2015 school year.
