Hey I just have a few questions pertaining to the STP program. I understand they will give me a list of what all to bring, but I was wondering:

How are the days structured? (schedule wise)

Academics are five days a week, but what is there to do for the weekends after being relieved of academic duty?

I saw where it mentioned that vehicles are permitted. Roughly how many people actually bring a car/vehicle with them?

After Academic Duty, do we just relax and hang out with the rest of the people there after studying of course :shake:.

Just trying to get a better look into what it's going to be like. Thanks.

Okay, I finally got your answers. Sorry for the delay... it's been pretty hectic what with the Big South Championships falling right around midterm for most of us. Here's the response I got from one of my buddies who has been an STP Counselor for the past two years:

How are the days structured? (schedule wise)

Mon/Wed/Fri…PT, breakfast, class/lunch, dinner, study

Tues/Thurs… breakfast, class/lunch, Intramurals, dinner, study

Homework and hang out with friends…watch movies, PT.

Anyone and everyone.

Pretty much.

It may not be as detailed as you were looking for, but I hope this helps.

Thank you so much again RVM. You've certainly along with Bruno have far exceeded to the response time and the thoroughness of your answers. I am greatly appreciate as I'm sure everyone else is for the time and you both have dedicated ti answering our questions and putting our fears to ease. More or less, yes these are perfect answers. I was in a bit of a rush while writing these so didn't realize that questions 2 and 4 are basically the same thing. I figured that something big had to be going on and then realized what activities were taking place. The schedule is the most intriguing to me personally seeing I'm always looking to find out more than what I generally need to know. Some other questions that come to mind.

After Academic duty we are free from obligation, but must return to the institute every night by a certain time correct?

Seeing that VMI offers Summer School like most school I figure we'll be going to school with some cadets as well? If so are we allowed to interact with them as long as no dating which I read is made very clear and is understandable. Would you recommend speaking with any of the cadets?

Is there a boundary as to how far we're allowed to venture off from the institute?

Is STP semi-structured like a normal year? (4-6 people in a room, anything else like that)

Off STP Topic, When do they generally release the Matriculation dates/any and all dates for the rats?

Thanks for any and all answers you've been way more than helpful in making up my mind about matriculating in August. As if you or Bruno haven't been enough, the nice letter addressed from the Supe's Office was definitely the icing on the cake.
Thanks for everything again.

I can answer a couple of these-During STP ONLY incoming rats will be there. STP is separate from the VMI summer sessions which the old corps can attend. This is a very good thing which you will appreciate once matriculation day rolls around (it's really not a good thing to be well known as a Rat). There may be some First Classmen trolling around looking for Dykes (my son got his dyke this way) but other than the STP counsellors you won't have any contact with the old corps.

My son had 3 room mates in his STP room- one from Virginia and then the rest - like him out of staters. These will not be your Rat roommates.

STP is not the Rat year- so it's pretty laid back but they do get you ahead of the power curve in terms of your Rat academics- knocking one course off your first semester load while helping you to improve your PT performance before the Rat line Starts.
Matriculation is 8/22/09 this summer according to the calendar on the web site (go look up calendar of events on the A-Z index.

Wow. Thanks a ton Bruno. One question came to mind while looking through some of the tentative dates. (football games, parades, etc) I'm wondering what the rules are for away football games. Are the upperclassmen or even rats a loud to take a "spirit pass" or something of the sort as long as you're in good academic standing, etc?

Thanks

I greatly appreciate it Bruno. just by reading these post i like LongGreyLine Hopeful am worying less on the topic. you and RVM have provided us eager cadets with substantial information i have yet to find in any book or any site. it is always helpful to have a inside look at whats coming at you. i also admire your ability to leave us just hanging in order to not, to the saying "spoil the surprise." but once agian i thank you for the information you guys have beenproviding us. it is dearly heeded
