Last week, a 2010 USAFA grad, Capt. Matthew Roland, and his aide, SSgt Forrest Sibley, were killed in action in Afghanistan by an insurgent posing as an Afghani soldier. Please keep both these heroes in your prayers. A new name will be going up on the memorial walls at Doolittle Hall and the Air Gardens.

Capt Roland was a STO (Special Tactics Officer); SSgt Sibley was a CCT (Combat Controller) -- NOT his aide. CCT's 'are part of the Air Force's Special Operations team and are FAA-certified air traffic controllers. They operate in remote and sometimes hostile areas helping the Air Force accomplish its mission by directing air traffic and alerting pilots and command of the location of hostile forces on the ground.'
No STO would ever call a CCT "an aide"

I too should apologize wildblueyonder. The Spec Ops community is very tight and they are hurting right now, (lost a TACP and CCT a few weeks earlier in a freefall jump accident in FL). DS is in that community. You hit a nerve suggesting SSgt Sibley was an aide, but you really meant well in spreading the word, and stating the fact that sadly a new name will be on the Memorial Wall. And I overreacted. Please accept my apology.
 
Rank and community seldom define the real role and certainly don't define the man.

God bless these two Americans and comfort their families.
 
What a sad honor it must have been to fly your classmate home! One side of me would be so proud and the other would hurt so much. Really drives home the point: USAFA is NOT your average college experience, Folks this stuff is for Real. God bless these two that gave their full measure of service to and for us and our Country.
 
My heart aches for these fine men and for their families and friends and those they served with.
It tears at me everytime I hear we are attacked by those who we are supposed to be helping or training. Will It ever end?
How many more families will have to stand on the tarmac At Peterson Air Force Base waiting for their loved one to be brought home.

How many more names will be added to the Memorial Wall On the Terrazzo, where the names are just not engraved in the marble, but are touched with families hands full of love and soaked in tears.

God bless them, and thank them for the ultimate sacrifice.
