DS just finished the CFA with the following results:

60 feet BB throw
18 pull ups
8.5 shuttle run
95 sit ups
71 push ups
7:15 mile

BB throw and mile were not great, but the others were pretty good. Those two events wouldn't be fails would they? Would you recommend retaking or is this result good enough to submit?

Easily a Pass - Submit , IMHO

Sit-ups near maximum, 18 pull-ups, wonderful, under 9 for shuttle ...wonderful, the CFA is Pass/Fail anyway after it is scored...

I think he is fine. There have been much lower scores on those and they got a pass. His run definitely needs to improve for down the road, but he has plenty of time for that!

Thanks for the quick feedback! Getting those scores posted is basically the last step in the application. Next up: CVW this weekend and then Nomination Applications.

What is passing on pull ups and push ups?
DS just did a mock CFA and got 6 pull ups (he is a big guy, not fat but pull ups are hard for him)
Did 50 push ups
61 sit ups
79 basketball throw
8.3 shuttle
6:21 mile
Gonna take it for real in about 2 weeks. Hope to improve by 1-3 pull ups and 5 or more pushups

The CFA score, for the most part is relatively lenient, but the Admissions Office/Board tends to focus on the sit-ups, push-ups, and mile run -- they want to see candidates above the USNA PRT score minimums. That being said, 61 sit-ups fails the PRT (65 is the minimum, 60%), 50 push-ups is barely passing (64.5%), but the run is good (~9:30 1.5 mile, 77.2%). I would be shooting for at least the 80% scores, which is 83-84 sit-ups and 70 push-ups. Obviously, +/- a few is okay, as there are other parts of the CFA which contribute to fatigue. However, showing that you can already earn a "B" on the PRT demonstrates you are fit and less likely to have PRT issues.

I focused on the sit-ups, push-ups and run too. Pull ups, because I'm a big guy too, were tough for me. Think I finally squeaked out 7 or 8?
But I did run a sub 5 mile, so I was happy with that. Definitely want to work to improve on the sit ups and push ups.

He has decided to do another mock CFA this Sunday if he is not too banged up from Friday Night Football. Also if the Texas heat will break I think his score will improve a bit. Meanwhile it is hard to mix CFA workouts with playing both ways on the football team but maybe we can get him to ok scores.

No excuses Brawny. An athlete in peak condition can handle the CFA AND Friday night lights.

Remember, when practicing for the CFA, yes, work on those plain weaknesses, but just as important, practice the CFA as a timed test, using the exact format of the test.

Also, ensure that the person submitting the CFA is the required official (i.e. PE instructor, active duty commissioned officer, or BGO -- a coach may ONLY administer the CFA if they also have physical education credentials). Admissions is checking for this and will reject CFA scores, if it isn't completed by the authorized person.

I agree to an extent but having played football through the collegiate level I need to make a point. Playing both ways on a football team could hinder or diminish performance on the CFA. It has nothing to do with "handling it" It has to do with all the impacts of football. Try doing pull ups with a contusion on your elbow or running a mile with a bruised knee. It can slow you down. We are trying to set up the CFA during the teams bye week to maximize his performance. By the way he ran through another mock exam yesterday her is his results;
BB throw 73
Pull Ups 7 (getting better)
Shuttle-8.6 (a bit worse)
Sit Ups 69 (better)
Push Ups 53 (better)
Mile 6:28 (almost same)
Trying to set it up for real with the P.E teacher in a couple of weeks
The football coach has also helped him out by tailoring the football morning weights session to be more help in CFA prep.
I am feeling better about this

He'll be OK. DS was mid-soccer season (club and varsity, playing 8-10 times a week) and had a broken wrist and still passed the CFA. Push-ups and pull-ups weren't fun, to say the least, and he didn't do as many as he could before his injury, but he got through it and is now a plebe.

Hang in there.

FWIW, DD took and passed CFA at Summer Seminar, although she thought she should improve her scores and had planned to retake this fall. Like some fellow posters, DD was a multi-sport varsity athlete where the skills for her sports don't necessarily completely align with the skills needed for the CFA. She was told by her BGO this summer that her SS scores were good enough. He encouraged her to work on her sports skills during the seasons then turn her attention back to fitness requirements after the season in order to prep for I-Day.

How important are the pull-ups? That is DS weakest point. His NROTC stats were 89 sit ups, 75 push ups and a 5:26 mile. He might get the shuttle below 8 but will be close. BB throw we are working on but think he can get 60 to 70. Quite honestly, pull-ups suck. No other way to say it.

Like how many can he do?
I struggled quite a bit with the pull-ups too. Worked for 5 months to finally be able to do 8-and they were not pretty. All I have to say is thank God pull-ups are not part of our prt.
I knew I could max out push ups, sit ups and still run a sub 5 mile so honestly, that's what I focused on. Your son's stats are good but there is always room for improvement.

Any idea what a passing female bent arm hang score would be? Average is 27...Any clue what the minimum might be?
