Dropping a Class

Sorry for posting again, I just have a quick question. I have verbally committed to attend USMA as the Class of 2020 and was told by the coach that I would be receiving a LOA. Right now I'm taking a class (AP) and it's not helping, it's hurting (a lot). I've studied furiously, I go after for extra help almost everyday, and I have multiple tutors I'm just not doing well. I'm wondering if me dropping this class will affect me receiving my LOA, and how would I go about notifying the admissions office that my schedule has changed? Is it worth it? If this will create any issues I don't want to risk it at all. Thanks for your help!

Might make a difference based on what class it is? Also, your best bet is to talk to the coach. If you were going to receive an LOS as an athlete it's not clear it will affect the LOA. Only the coach will know for sure.

Are we talking Calculus AB? WHY are you having trouble in the class (and fencersmother does not tolerate the response of "teacher doesn't like me")??

You instinct is probably correct - there may be repercussions.

Depends on the class. Calc, Chem, physics. Or Econ or something? Talk to the coach. You are allowed (unless the rules have changed) to contact the coach. You don't have to wait for your weekly phone call.

You're stuck in a catch 22. You need to preserve your GPA. However, if you drop your class to maintain that GPA and struggle to grasp the subject matter now. When you get to WP what will you do when the same subject comes up for study, and you have Thayer week? This is were the service academies differ from "State U", as a recruited athlete your needed for the school, ant WP you're needed for the Army. You could skate by at "State U" but at WP you will need to maintain your academics. If you fall behind, you'll soon find yourself facing academic boards. Although, WP does have several layers of academic assistance that will help you. You just need to put the effort. WP is a pressure cooker! I really don't think many understand what they are getting themselves into.

It sounds like you think I just verbally committed all willy nilly and I want to stress that I know what I'm getting into and what I signed up for. I'm going to West Point first and foremost to become an officer in the United States Army. I'm taking Macro at this point because I thought it would be a fun class and I wanted to see if it would be something I would be interested in majoring in. Why should I not drop it if it's hurting me and I have the option to? Am I going to be required to take Macro if I'm not majoring in Econ? Is it a class that everyone has to take?

Those were actual questions I wasn't being sarcastic! I apologize if I came off sounding that way, I was actually really wondering if I would have to take Macro if I'm not majoring in Econ..

You will take one semester of Economics in your Yearling year (not sure if it is Micro or Macro or both) independent of your major.

Ok, you win again, and this is why I rarely give exact answers to vague questions on here because there are soooooo many variables that come in to play.

WP does not require/recognize AP classes because they are not available to all students at all high schools across the country.

However, the classes are valuable in preparation for college level courses. WP academic stress is even greater than “State U”. At WP you will be taking 21 units, fast passed, and using the Thayer Method of study. You will also have your military, and physical standards to maintain etc. IOCT, AFPT…..

You will be required to take Econ during your Yuk year. It is basic. But what does that mean? I don’t know who you are, the type of high school you’re attending, how competitive your district is, heck I don’t even know the color of your hair!

Econ at WP is at a college level, hah WP level, which is much higher than “State U”. Remember that 21 units? You’ll be struggling with Math, Chem (Plebe and Yuk killers) and getting your run time and pushups done too. That basic Econ class has a different complexity now.

If your AP class grade is below a B, consider dropping it, to maintain a high GPA, to maintain a high class ranking at your school.

But don’t base your education upon some guy from cyber outer space who you don’t know the color of his hair or heck lack of hair!

Grow up; it’s your discussion! And if I can detect an attitude from you here in outer cyber space, can you imagine what an upper class student will do to you? Huh, I don’t want to have nightmares tonight, so I won’t entertain such thoughts!

A good friend of mine, his son is a Firstie now. He was bummed he got his academic gold star but fell in his class rank. Go figure but then thats WP!

Sounds like the all too familiar case of, "I need answers, but only the ones I want to hear."

And by the way, an LOA isn't an LOA until you have it in your hands. Coaches have been been misunderstood before.

And I verbally committed to Harvard, but they never got back to me. ;-)

I'm sorry if you feel that way. Thank you for your help.

Nikkip, Maplerock is right. You can verbally commit to anyone you please just now and until you have that piece of paper in your hand, well, that's why there is a paper trail.
