will being on the golf team make my application more competitive?

Hi! I'm a 9th grade student who REALLY wants to become a US coast guard.
Ever since I was an elementary student, I had dreamed of patrolling the seas of my own country!
My goal in this period of life is definitely getting ready for making a super competitive application for USCGA, my dream college.

I am quite well informed that participating in extracurricular activities will not only enhance the all the fun I will have in high school, but also effect my chances of becoming a student at coast guards academy, apart from GPAs, SATs, and ACTs. So I have been thinking of playing a sport at school.

First I must tell you this: I am not a very skilled sports player. I do know how to play basketball and golf, but I don't think I'm one of those ace players on the team, not mentioning the fact that I may not even get in the team:(
I have been thinking of playing golf, but I haven't played for a long time. But I do have some experience of playing for about 3 years as an elementary school student, and can go practice anytime I wish to.

But I do have a passion in something: dance. I know this is quite off the topic, but I know that I'm better in dancing than golfing. Our school has its very own varsity dance team apart from the cheer leading team called 'song'. I don't know if I'll make it, but I am planning to try out anyway at the end of this year.


So my question is 'which one will increase my chances of getting into CGA?'

I am more skilled in dance and even enjoy it, but if golf will help me reach my goals, I am ready to pick up my old golf bag and start practicing to get in our school golf team.

What should I do?
 
First, it's a good thing that you know what you want to do, and are looking for the path to achieve that. You will have to play sports at CGA, and golf is available as a leisure sport. So since you feel that you might not be good enough to make the basketball team, here are some suggestions. First, try out for the team anyway. It is a good experience. Second, consider cross country and track. These are varsity sports at the Academy, and will get you in good physical shape. Third, play golf, if that is what you like. And, the Academy does have a dance team for their sports events that does count as a sport.

Make sure to be involved in something outside of school. Volunteering for your community is great. After learning what is involved, work towards being in charge of something. Scouting is a great program.

Make sure to keep your grades up, and prepare for the SAT and ACT. Work on your writing... Good grades, athletics and leadership are what the Academy is looking for, as well as that desire to serve. Good luck.
 
"I hope you never lose your sense of wonder". "I hope you dance". I loved playing that song to my Daughter and she is now USNA graduate and USMC Captain. Go for it no matter what your sport history is and best luck to you on your application procedure. Daughter played sports in high school which are not played at SAs (Field Hockey, Women's Ice Hockey and sometimes Women's Lacrosse) but they do have Club Teams which I would be sure Golf is one at USCGA. Lack of varsity sports should not discourage you.
 
Anyone can be good at track. All it takes is hard work and dedication. They want leadership!!! Make captain if you can, if not class office, if not that at least an officer in one or more clubs.
 
The coast guard is not that great of an academy. You would rather sail huge ships with a license at the Merchant Marine Academy than try and catch the bad guys in the coast guard.

Hey sport...This is not the place to disrespect a SA.
 
A very stupid comment. Merchant Marine does not save lives on a regular basis or "catch the bad guys" with the power to arrest, but they do make more money.

Absolutely. want to sail to every corner of the earth working 6 months and a 6 figure salary? The merchant marine academy is your best bet. Want to be a pencil pusher for the government? US Coast guard is a great option.
 
Next time you are on the "El Faro", "Pendleton" or "Fort Mercer" radio the Merchant Marine. The Coast Guard will probably be pushing pencils and to busy to respond.
 
Jmoney..We gave you a chance to back off, but you continued your disrespect..Pretty sad, since the Navy provides your Weather support, and the Coast Guard risks their lives to save your butts when you mess up..Think about your mission and the mission of other Services. Everyone has an important job to do. I hope your attitude does not reflect that of your Academy. If so, that would be sad. USN Retired Sends
 
Jmoney. Guess you are not going for a Commission at the end. Hope the Coast Guard license test isn't too hard for you. Fair winds and following seas and I hope my Son (current Merchant Marine and Ensign USNR) never sails with you if you are either in a deck or engineering position.

jesus, you all know that Coast guard and merchant marine are rival academies, right? and this year WE DID BEAT COAST GUARD in every game played (football, volleyball, soccer). and it doesnt matter to me who was appointed where. at the end of the day you have to be in the coast guard while merchant marine can cross commission or sail and make six figures right out of school. Merchant Marine Academy Mariners > Puddle Pirates.

Virtually everyone here has a favorite SA, branch or College, but it is simply bad form and frowned upon to put down another program, SA or college. You can talk up USMMA as much as you want. You can also yell "beat Coasties" for football. However, you will not be well regarded on this forum if you denigrate a poster's choice of career path or branch.

I've looked back at your prior posts and this isn't your first time offending folks on this site. You are clearly an accomplished young person who has been honored with an appointment to USMMA.

Why not behave accordingly?
 
Accomplished? With these current posts I don't think so. I hope these post don't come back to bite you. Hope they are not on your Facebook. They never go away. Current posts are not worthy of an Officer in any Service, Merchant Marine or any Seagoing Service. Try making six figures your first year. It ain't going to happen.
