The Citadel beats VMI 35 - 14 and retains the Silver Shako Trophy in the annual "Military Classic of the South", winning for the 9th straight time and 13th time in the last 15 meetings. 22d ranked Bulldogs now 7 - 2, 6 - 0 in the Southern Conference; will play Chattanooga this week for at least a share of the league title.

Ahhh, The Military Classic of the South. This "classic" came into existence as the annual game between VMI and VPI (Virginia Tech) starting in 1896. This rivalry was moved to Roanoke in 1921 with both schools arriving by trains, and the clash of two all-military schools in the "Military Classic of the South" lasted until 1971. However, as Virginia Tech began to expand, this classic became very one-sided! Thus, VMI stopped playing VPI a few decades ago. It may take a few more decades, but VMI (the only all-military school in this "Classic") will eventually figure this one out as well...
Ra Virginia Mil!

The current series has gotten pretty one sided and yes, you could actually have a winning season by the end of this century

From the VMI side the game was disappointing as they have shown a lot of positive signs this season. But for some unknown (as of now anyway) reason the starting QB Al Cobb who has been a huge part of the offense was out with an injury and did not play, which made VMI's offense positively anemic (1st and goal from the 4 and we couldn't score?!) - and with 7 turnovers it was pretty much a foregone conclusion. It wasn't a great game from the Citadel side either though- as they looked fairly sloppy as well. Ah well - just another chance to say " wait till next year".

We had about a half dozen Massachusetts Alums watching the game here in a local pub- including a 2012 Citadel grad. Here in New England we have some shared Alumni events with the Citadel alums- Interestingly none of the VMI alums ever seem to be interested in slamming the Citadel , nor have virtually any of the others whom I know ever engaged in anything other than good natured ribbing between the schools . So for those kind of tired of the nonsense by some on here- rest assured that the vast majority of VMI and Citadel alums look at each other as kindred spirits with pretty closely related experiences. So in that spirit- despite the disappointing outcome of the game which is starting to feel pretty much like Army- Navy after a decade of consecutive losses by VMI- congratulations to the Bulldogs on the game and on what is a pretty successful season so far and good luck against Chattanooga next week.

I was at the game yesterday and was very impressed with VMI's defense. If Cobb plays I doubt we win that game. I see good things ahead for VMI football.

talked with a VMI grad at the game yesterday, Cobb sustained a concussion but no details on how it happened.
some of you are shooting the wrong messenger, NAS has carried on a campaign of putdowns, disinformation and constant snarkey remarks that has even carried over to vandalizing Wikipedia articles on The Citadel and the Military Classic of the South. Deal with the problem at its source.

It must be sad to be so insecure about your school that you need to turn every thread into a pissing contest. Stop now or it will be a permanent ban. We are all tired of it.

Don't think the original shot was fired at you majstlo, maybe the second one :). Thanks Stealth for stepping up- it has gotten very old and discouraging to all- and I glad a moderator finally call it to task...

I was talking to everyone.

I'm very proud of my alma mater and I'll encourage anyone to go there, but I cannot see how knocking other schools does any good. Be proud of your school, just don't be an ass about it. The thing that matters is how well the school did in educating it's students. Football scores and student composition mean nothing in the long run.

This forum exists to assist candidates in their pursuit of admission to the schools of their choice. Let's keep that as the goal.

Well said, indeed!

Thanks El Cid -- I agree. As NAS and others know, I'm not a VMI grad -- just the proud dad of a Rat that is on the team (he's not playing yet but he did earn a spot as "walk-on").

I am also a proud USAFA grad so I am very biased in favor of the new VMI coach. He is making a great positive difference in my opinion. The turnaround might be "next year" . . . or it might be a little later . . . but it is coming . . . ;)

Rah VA Mil! Bruno / NAS -- did I do it right?
