Just wondering if it is customary for ALO's or other USAFA reps to present the official 'appointment' at HS graduation. i know it is common for usna appointees to have a BGO come to present at graduations. Just curious.
Thanks

You hear of this happening at many different places. Some prefer their High School awards ceremony (which may or may not be at the same time as graduation), some have it presented during a CAP awards ceremony, some duing JROTC awards ceremony, some not at all. My D's ALO asked her what she would like.

mine did, and a lot of my friends' did theirs' at either graduation or an awards ceremony. our school didn't have a separate awards ceremony.

Our school had a SR awards night, this is where they recognized the students that were awarded scholarships with their value(i.e. univerisities re merit, ROTC and SAs). If you have that than give a courteousy call to your ALO and ask them to present. For us, we had a AFROTC rep(reminder....ds selected the full ride AFROTC over the SA) it was a very proud and tearful moment. They spoke about his achievements that resulted in his AFROTC selection, how few were selected, the actual dollar value in the scholarship... the full ride merit to Duke (valedictorian) and the USMMA were the only others that were higher in value. They then went onto promote the AFA and what he would be enjoying with this scholarship....ending with he knows in 4 yrs he will have a job waiting for him:shake:
The people sitting next us had no idea until they saw me crying that it was our DS. Every seat that could reach us, shook our hands, tapped us on our shoulders, and showed such awe that I am crying now over that memory. It is amazing how other parents when they start hearing the stats, change their opinion of the level in which these recipients competed.
I recall LY that a HS SR had the ALO show up in class to present. I am assuming that it occurred this way due to the lack of a SR awards night. Call your GC...if they don't have one, than call the ALO...I am sure they would love to find a solution to do it at school. Great PR for the AFA!

Good luck...and thank you for allowing your child to serve!

AIM HIGH...ABOVE ALL!

Had my ALO at an awards night. Of the roughly 4-500 students having their scholarships announced, 4 of us were going on to SAs (with one more going to Falcon Foundation prep). The combined total of the 4 of us going to SAs was greater than the combined of everyone else in the room (over 1 million dollars). That made some eyes in there very wide!

haha.. i accounted for half of my graduating class's scholarship value. not too many ended up going to colleges with big scholarships to pay for everything

My school had an awards ceremony.
My ALO got up and gave a description of the academy and what an appointment meant. There was a collective, small gasp when he announced the dollar value. One of my friends mouthed a choice phrase that almost made me crack up while on stage. Thankfully, I didn't.

I think the appointment was about 25% of the overall scholarship value awarded for my class. (We get a pretty big edge though, the academies are expensive to run!)

I know this is the USAFA thread, but to save space does anyone know if USMA does this?

My school holds a separate senior awards night a week or two before graduation. From what I've heard, it's a long night 6:30-10:00ish since students seem to list every scholarship they have received... even for the schools they are not attending. Anyway, I was ushering last year so I was there when my ALO presented the offer of appointment to a friend of mine. ALO first awarded the ROTC scholarship, told about the competition, value, and opportunities. Then said my friend has decided to turn that offer down in lieu of something better... an offer of appointment to the AFA. Again, value, and opportunities were explained. It got a very loud and long applause, perhaps partly because it was the first award presented.

At our DS's HS, 5 students, including our DS, out of a 335 class totaled for over 75% of the monetary value... if you put just 2 together the military accounted for almost 50% of the entire amount, the other 3 were going to IS schools like UNCCH.

If your school does SRs night it is very long, because they do acknowledge every scholarship that the student was offered. Values ranged from 100 to 350K+.

Which really does confuse me. It just does not make sense to announce the scholarships to that are not relevant to the school the student it is attending. I will have my ALO do AFROTC and AFA, since that was how he did it last year, but I see no need to announce NRTOC, scholarship money to UT, TAMU.......

I was mailed a letter from AFROTC regarding how I want my scholarship awarded during the senior awards, and it said that if you will not be presented with it if you do not intend on accepting the scholarship.
