Hello,

I am leaning strongly towards joining the Army Reserves, but I currently go to college.

What I would like to do is after BCT and AIT, I would like to transfer to a larger university - specifically a SMC so I can become an officer; ideally active duty.

My questions are: Is it possible, and how long would it take?

I hope my tone isn't pretentious.

Please reply.

Respectfully,

SENJames

I'm confused...which is it Reserves or AD?

I am interested in joining the reserves, but after BCT & AIT I want to transfer to a larger institution so I can do ROTC. My question is can I do that, and if so how long would it take?

Need a bit more information.

What year in college are you?
Will you be missing any school to attend both BCT and AIT?
How long after you attend BCT and AIT would you be enrolling in a new college?
Have you talked to the Battalion at the school you wish to transfer?
Are you talking about being a SMP cadet?

More information will help in getting answers and advice.

I will finish my second year this spring.
Yes, I could very possibly miss the first semester of the Fall of 2016.
I would want to do it almost immediately.
No I have not spoken to the new school, I would want to transfer to.
I would be interested in SMP or possibly the 2-year ROTC scholarship.

I would be interested in SMP or possibly the 2-year ROTC scholarship.

If you join the Reserves the only scholarship you will be able to get would a GRFD that would prohibit you from going Active Duty.

SMP is a good option as long as you don't take the GRFD if you want Active.

Doing the Reserves or ROTC? The answer is the same, I am wanting to serve my country.

If you want active duty and you aren't desperate for money to pay for school, skip the reserves and do ROTC only.

I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. What do you want to be doing when you graduate? Joining the Guard/Reserves and then wanting to commission and go active duty can be complicated sometimes. If you want to end up on active duty and do NOT need the educational benefits from the Guard/Reserves to pay for college, it will be better to hold off and only do ROTC.

I do need the money to pay for college. What complications are their from going Reserves to Active Duty.

If you join the reserves and then join ROTC, the only scholarship you can get, as JCleppe said earlier, is the GRFD (Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty) scholarship. That will prohibit you from going active duty. Now you can join ROTC while in the reserves and not take that scholarship and only use the GI Bill and ROTC contract benefits to help cover school, but I don't know what you personally need to finish your degree. Or you can not join the reserves, join ROTC and compete to get a contract and even a scholarship that will allow you to go active duty.

Since you're already in school you're behind the power curve. The army is already working to fill the number of cadets they need for your specific year group to commission. The longer you wait the harder it could get. Your next move should be to talk to the Recruiting Operations Officer (ROO) at the ROTC program you intend to join. That person is NOT located at your neighborhood recruiting station.

If you join the guard or reserves you can still get a "line scholarship". You are not limited to a GRFD scholarship. You just can't remain in the guard or reserves if you get a line offer.
